Hotel Lybeer is an excellent hostel in an adorable city. It's situated on a very quiet residential street about five minutes from the main sites (City Hall, Belfry, Church of the Holy Blood, etc). Once you get out of the train station, it's an easy 10 minute walk (cross the highway and follow the meandering path through the park until you can't go any farther. Then bear to the left past some cafes and in rapid succession, make two rights and a left).
While smelling a bit smoky (this is Europe, they all do), the place has old-fashioned charm and perfectly functional bathrooms in the hall. The rooms have a sink and just enough furniture to not get in the way. It's totally quiet, even as the crowds come in around midnight. And the heat works really well, too! Always a bonus.
The best part about this place was the all-out typical Belgian breakfast, which is included in the price - have your fill of cheese, breads, cereal, yogurt and even some meats. There's also free Internet, but it's painfully slow. Lybeer was a good bargain in a great location.
