Good and bad
I'm torn with this joint, mainly because of the owner. He was nice enough, but I'm pretty low key. The partiers of the hostel ran up against the "24 hour reception" a few nights in a row. Returning at 6-7am shouldn't be an issue according to the hostel, but in reality the owner yelled at several guests for doing so. He sleeps about two hours a night, and spends the rest prowling the floors, alternating between coffee and liquor, insisting on "Hamam, hamam" for any one that might relieve his insomniatic boredom. On another occasion, there was about 12 of us lounging about in the (admittedly very nice) upstairs common area. A couple of them were napping between expeditions into Istanbul by resting their heads in their arms, so instead he shook them awake and gestured for them to go to bed! Perhaps he was being nice. One of my friends had been staying a few nights and was expecting another friend to arrive shortly. Due to a language barrier mix-up, my friend was moved, while the incoming guest put in a different room. Bear in mind, the place was empty, I would estimate, 15+ beds available. They asked if they could just sleep in the same room, but the owner wasn't having it. A few guys I've spoken to have been told the place is full -- it isn't, I'm typing this from a 6-bed room with only me in it, I have two mates downstairs in separate 4-bed rooms, plus I have seen that the larger 12-14 bed rooms are half empty! It's all very weird. ON A MORE POSITIVE NOTE: It's cheap, there are loads of places to eat and drink nearby, the owner's daughter is lovely and really cute, PLUS she drove some other friends to the airport shuttle up the road when she saw all of their luggage! Like I said, good and bad. Personally, I was fine, but didn't like seeing the way others were treated.
