Andes Camp Lodge Reviews

Andes Camp Lodge is a popular hostel, located around fifteen minutes' walk from the centre of Huaraz. Advantages include a decent free breakfast and onsite travel agency. However, the hostel lacks a real social vibe due to a lack of comfortable common spaces, and there are too few bathrooms.

The Location

Andes Camp Lodge is located on a fairly quiet back street. It is close to some long-distance bus terminals, but apart from this the location is a little inconvenient. There are a few small shops nearby but you will need to walk twenty minutes to the centre for the market, bigger shops, and restaurants.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Andes Camp Lodge has both dorms and private rooms. The rooms are spread over several floors, so expect to spend a lot of time going up and down stairs! Rooms are fairly small and cramped. Four-bed dorms contain bunk-beds of varying quality -- some are very comfy while others are less so. All come with clean, fresh bedding and warm blankets.

A small number of shared bathrooms are available. The facilities are basic but functional and showers produce both hot and cold water. Unfortunately, there is just one bathroom on each floor, so there are queues for the bathrooms in busy periods.

Common Spaces

The ground floor houses a communal kitchen, seating area, and front desk for the hostel and travel agency. This area can become crowded in the mornings when a simple but filling breakfast is served. The kitchen is closed to guests in the mornings, but opens after breakfast (worth bearing in mind if you are leaving early for a hike and need to prepare food!). The staff have a casual attitude to attending the front desk, but if you do manage to find a member of staff, they are able to provide information and organise tours through their travel agency. Free baggage storage is available in an unlocked room above the kitchen.

There is another communal space on the top floor with a sofa and a couple of hammocks. There isn’t a huge amount of interaction between guests in the common areas, and the hostel is usually fairly quiet.

Summary

Andes Camp Lodge is a good base for those looking to explore the Huaraz region. Although it lacks any real social vibe, it offers all the hostel necessities and has the advantage of offering free breakfast and a travel agency.
