The Medina Hostel Tangier offers a nice roof terrace, free breakfast, and a location in the middle of the Medina. The downside is the rather basic rooms that could in some cases need renovations.
The Location
The hostel is located a twenty-minute walk from the ferry port; some taxi stands are also close by (five to ten minutes' walk away). As it is in the middle of the narrow Medina streets, there is no car access. It is well signed from one of the main Medina streets, but can still be a bit confusing to find, as those tiny streets form a sheer labyrinth. There will be a lot of people offering help to find it, but be warned that they usually expect money or in the worst case can lead you to some other accommodation where they get commission for bringing guests there. The surroundings can seem a little scary at nighttime -- you should know your way well when you arrive late and better be with others.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are dorms and double rooms in the hostel, all equipped with en suite bathrooms. The rooms have metal beds and metal lockers where you can put your own lock. The beds have small reading lights. The bathrooms are rather small, containing shower and toilet -- but there's no shower curtain, so the risk that everything gets wet, especially when six people use it, is high. Also the bathroom we used had a problem with the shower drain, as the water would not automatically flow down since it was too high. Also there is a problem with humidity in the room and bathroom. The rooms lack windows and if they have windows they often open to some inner courtyard, which makes light and ventilation a problem. This is a common problem due to the architecture in Medina houses and does not only concern this hostel.
Common Spaces
The best thing about this hostel in Tangier is its big roof terrace. You can chill there in the evening, take a rest from exploring the Medina, or take your breakfast there. There are also indoor rooms upstairs, such as the kitchen and the TV room. Downstairs you have sitting areas as well; these are in typical Moroccan design.
Summary
While this hostel has seen better days it seems, still you get a clean and basic accommodation for a very reasonable price. The common areas, especially the roof terrace, are a big plus and if you do not need a stylishly designed hostel or have any special demands, this might be your choice.
