Jugendherberge Stuttgart International Hostel Reviews

Jugendherberge Stuttgart International Hostel, with its stunning views, is a fairly classic, HI-style hostel with interior decor like most of HI hostels from forty years ago, and we think the rooms could use a renovation. The atmosphere is more geared towards students and groups, but single travelers can still mingle and meet new people. The included breakfast is fairly good, with a variety of different options more than the usual continental breakfast.

The Location

The hostel's location is not very convenient to the city center, but the excellent views of the city, especially at night, make up for the location. It is intriguingly built into the side of a very steep hill, and the entrance requires crossing a foot bridge and descending a glass tower with three-hundred-sixty-degree views. The nearest public transport is a little less than ten minutes by foot, with a few trolley lines servicing the nearest stop. The hostel is in a very quiet residential area with no shops or cafes nearby, and walking there at night along dark streets can feel somewhat intimidating.

Rooms and Bathrooms

At the time they were built, the rooms may have been high style, but the old, wooden, nineteen-seventies style bunk beds; dingy floors; and older bathrooms are in need of renovation, but the mattresses are comfortable. There are adequately sized lockers and tables with chairs in the rooms, along with reading lights in the bunk beds. In the bathroom, the water pressure and temperature are adequate, but there aren't enough convenient places to keep things dry when showering or using the sink, and the space is very small and a little grungy, albeit generally clean.

Common Spaces

This hostel is teeming with large common spaces on multiple levels, including a game room, reading/meeting areas, and a huge dining area with an outdoor balcony overlooking the valley. The common areas are great places to meet people or just to hang out away from your room. The amount of common spaces is more than most hostels we've visited, and were the most pleasant part of our stay at this hostel, and it's easy to meet new people there. Because the common spaces are separated from the sleeping areas by several doors, it is possible to get a good night's sleep even with people hanging out in the common areas.

Summary

Overall, the inconvenient location of this hostel and the older, slightly dingy rooms are worth putting up with for a great view, good breakfast, plenty of common areas, and fairly quiet rooms. You can meet new people, enjoy a decent breakfast, take in the stunning views, and get a good night's sleep for a reasonable price.
