Hitchhikers Lima Hostel emanates chill vibes from its historic dwelling set in the affluent Miraflores district.

The Location

Miraflores is considered one of Lima's most tourist-centered areas, featuring beautiful parks, shopping markets, bars, cafes, restaurants, museums, and the beach (of course). Kennedy Park, with its abundance of live-in cats, is just one of many interesting sites in this region.

The hostel is a cinch to find, as it's a large red building with an easily readable black sign. It can be accessed by bus or cab. It's about an hour by car from the airport. The hostel also offers parking for overland travelers.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Hitchhikers' rooms are fairly spacious for a hostel. Dorms are typical bunk-bed style (six or eight per room) and extra blankets are offered for chilly nights. Each room is fitted with good-sized lockers for valuables. Outdoor lockers are available for overland travelers. Unfortunately, power outlets are sparse and there are few shelves or hangers to place your items in the dorms.

There are three shared washrooms, each featuring a shower, toilet, sink, and hand soap. Each is located on the main floor -- as the rooms are on the second floor, this is somewhat of an inconvenience, especially during a late-night bathroom run. Showers are hot with strong pressure. One bathroom sink's pressure is so intense that a small turn of the knob leaves you soaked. Towels are provided upon request.

Common Spaces

The common areas found in Hitchhikers are really what make the accommodation shine. Multiple rooms are decked out with comfy couches and chairs, coffee tables, and eye-catching works of art. Outside the main building, travelers can enjoy the sun in the courtyard, which offers multiple tables and chairs for chilling and chatting, foosball, and a ping-pong table.

The hostel kitchen is usable, with everything necessary to cook (though it lacks multiples of basic utensils such as sharp knives). Large floor space and two sinks make it easier for several cooks in the kitchen at once. The complimentary breakfast consists of bread, coffee, and juice, served by staff.

Hitchhikers provides a TV (sorry, no Netflix) and a dated computer station for visitors who need their tech fix. Wi-Fi is not particularly good and was completely offline for much of our stay. There is also a variety of information and pamphlets for local activity ideas.

Summary

Overall, Hitchhikers Lima serves up a comfortable and tranquil stay in a great location for budget and overland travelers. Staff are very friendly and helpful -- they do a great job maintaining the property and can often be found cleaning. The main spoken language is Spanish, but staff can usually understand English requests.
