Castle Hostel Reviews

Description

Castle Hostel has five private rooms on the first and second floors of a Victorian "gentleman's residence" (to use real estate agent speak) - expanding to 9 rooms in the winter months. Most rooms have the original wooden floors giving them a bright, clean feel. All rooms (except one) have a wash basin. Rooms are either double, twin or triple. Triple can either be three singles (a bunk bed and 1 single) or a double and a single. Some rooms are ensuite, others used shared bathroom facilities. We have a small kitchen with an electric oven and hobs, a microwave, a toaster, a kettle and a refrigerator with all the usual crockery, cutlery and utensils. There is also a south-facing common room/dining room area to the front of the property on the first floor allowing you to enjoy the sunshine (when it shines) and the view. Parking is available on the road (no restrictions or charges) or, subject to space and preference to the neighbouring Guesthouse customers, to the rear of the hostel. We offering washing and drying facilities. Use of the washing machines is not self-service; instead we will do this for you and ask you for a contribution for our supported charity (the Christmas shoebox appeal) in return.

Location and Contact

Location

Castle Hostel is ideally located in Ballycastle at the heart of the Giants Causeway Coast and Antrim Glens region. The hostel is half-way between Ballycastle town centre and Ballycastle seafront (the town being a traditional market town by the sea rather than a "seaside" town). Castle Hostel is directly opposite Ballycastle Integrated Primary School ("integrating" Catholics, Protestants and "Others" if you are curious). The picturesque town centre (modelled by the local landowner, Hugh Boyd, in the 18th century) is 5 mins walk and offers plenty of bars, restaurants and shops to obtain all the necessities and more besides. The seafront boasts spectacular views towards Fair Head, the Mull of Kintyre (in Scotland) and Rathlin Island, as well as plenty of fantastic coffee shops and breakfast bars. You can take day trips to Rathlin Island (and hopefully see the puffins and seals as well as a few humanoids) or travel on from Ballycastle to Scotland via the Kintrye Express (90 min journey - specific days) to and from Campbeltown on the Mull of Kintrye. The Giants Causeway is a short bus ride along the coast and we are a perfect base for walking excursions with the Causeway Coastal walk, the Moyle Way, Torr Head, Murlough Bay and Fair Head and Rathlin Island all offering excellent rambles. Cycling is also a great way to explore the area and we can offer bike hire provided it is booked in advance. The nearest bus stop is Ballycastle Marine Corner (2 mins walk) or we can arrange pick-up for a small charge at the nearest train station - Ballymoney Railway Station - 25 km away. Parking on the roadside is unrestricted and free (the numbered markings on the footpath are for stalls at the annual Lammas Fair in August) or, subject to availability, you can park in the private yard to the rear of the Hostel.
