At the base of the Jura mountains, tucked between the smaller communities of Solothurn and Biel, lies the city of Grenchen, Switzerland. Traditionally a small farming village, Grenchen’s watch industry helped it grow to become a substantial city in only 150 years – making this unique community a fascinating destination for travelers.

This town is also known for its beautiful wetlands, which not only make for a perfect space to take an afternoon stroll – but are heavily used by a wide variety of wading birds who use the area as a resting spot during their migrations between northern Europe and their southern winter habitats. The Witi nature conservation area is a spot of national importance, and is a great attraction for birdwatchers and nature lovers.

Cycling is especially popular here, especially around some of the many lakes in the area – including the Bielersee, Neuenburgersee, and Murtesee lakes. The weather is very pleasant in Grenchen, allowing visitors to take advantage of a number of outdoor recreation opportunities while exploring this scenic landscape.

To learn more of Grenchen’s history, visitors can check out the beautiful 16th century pilgrimage chapel located above the town, Allerheiligen. From your local hostel or hotel, there is plenty to explore around the community, and just walking the streets of Grenchen will introduce you to the history of this area. The town was recognized in 2008 for its extensive architectural heritage, which can be found throughout Grenchen.

Accommodations here are varied and easy to find, from hostels to private holiday rental properties. Your hostel stay will give you the chance to explore more of Switzerland from a comfortable base near the mountains, in a charming but busy community.

Grenchen does have a small airport, primarily used by private charters. There are two railway stations here, and Grenchen boasts its own bus company – making getting in and out of Grenchen from your hotel or hostel fairly simple.
