Get to know Subotica (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Subotica.

Subotica is a subdued and beautiful town on the Serbian border to Hungary. This small town is more likely a stop than a destination, and is probably worth a day, especially if you're looking for something slow paced between Budapest and Belgrade. The city center starts just past the train station and is focused around the main pedestrian drag, culminating at the city hall square. On the fringe of the center, you'll find a market with very delicious local produce, a bakery, and an impressive selection of products from beekeepers. Around this area, you should be sure to look for the Synagogue, which we can only say is worth seeing without spoiling it for you. Otherwise you might try your luck at the local secondhand shops or just settle in for a coffee. Subotica University is spread around the city with several faculties around the center. You can join the local students in their pursuit of caffeine or alcohol, at the few bars and weekend parties. Furthermore, you can investigate the town's surprisingly diverse architecture or screw it all and escape your Subotica hostel quickly to one of the local lakes for a swim and good grilled food, cold pivo (beer), and local schnapps, proudly made from fruit grown nearby.

There isn't much choice among hostels in Subotica. Hostel standards are good here, and you're likely to fall in with a mix of international travelers interested enough to show up here, and Serbians and Hungarians either on their way somewhere or also just interested in this little town. Perhaps your consolation prize to not having a broader selection is that the city is small and you can walk everywhere.
