Nestled on the Peruvian coast, Paracas, Peru, is only four hours from Lima and is definitely worth visiting whether you're heading south or even if you need to get back to Lima -- the detour is worth it! It's a quaint beach town, which looks a little rough around the edges, but this is mostly down to the dryness of the surrounding area. The buildings are rustic looking, and many are not completed, with outdoor water tanks and mounds of rubbish piling up. This wouldn't be so bad, if it weren't so hot, as the rubbish attracts flies and dogs; however, do not let you put this off visiting, it's simply worth knowing in advance!
Everything is close together; as it's such a small town, you can walk from the bus station to your hostel in Paracas, Peru, and from one end of town to the other. There's lots of Paracas, Peru hostels, and because it's such a small town, no matter which Paracas, Peru hostel you choose, you won't be too far from the main town. There are lots and lots of restaurants and souvenir shops/handicrafts markets, however supermarkets and cash points are harder to find and more hidden.
It's a beautiful seaside town flocked with pelicans, penguins, and pink flamingos. You should take the tour to the Ballestas Islands and also to the National Park. You'll see lots of wildlife and lots of geological points of interest by doing these tours. The seafood is popular here due the location, and the sunsets are amazing. They have hardly any rain, ever, so be prepared for the sunshine and the heat when staying in Paracas!
