"yes, it's a bit of an old place, and perhaps needs redecoration. However it has character, and it makes a change from staying in pristine hostels which can be a bit austere. The kitchen facilities are a bit poor, but adequate for a small number of travelers. There's nothing seriously bad about this place and it's an ok place to spend a night or two. I love the place! It has a real New Zealand feel to it. With the river right in the middle of town and the harbour not far, there's plenty of free sightseeing to be had. All the basics are there like cinema, supermarkets, choice of restaurants, and bars. The Monteith's Brewery tour is well worth it, there's plenty of beach, river, and hilly walks and of course the usual activities such as caving, quadbiking, and guided tours. There's also an excellent selection of accommodation for such a small place, but then it is the West Coast with plenty of scenery and nothing else between townships and Greymouth is the largest town! — Claire
