Wanaka Auberge de Jeunesses    "This hostel has a fantastic location, with amazing views of the lake. Unfortunately, during our particular stay they had managed to double book our room (which was a double) even though we had booked in October and sent a confirmation email the day before. Not a good first impression.
The hostel has a strange layout, in that you have to walk through the kitchen and laundry to get to some... "This hostel is a combination of a two-story lodge building (which also has one dorm room) and the older, wooden backpackers building. The hostel is one of the older hostels in Wanaka, and is showing its age and is looking frayed.
The Location
The hostel is located at the top of Helwick Street, which is the main street leading up from the lake in Wanaka. It is opposite an email and cycle... "Excellent -- better than many hotels! - We stayed in a double room in December 2008. The room was amazing (by hostel standards!) -- the building is new so everything was spotless. We had a huge bed with hotel style bedding, 32" Plasma TV and en-suite room with power shower. The view was out over the Lake. Perfect. Kitchen had a wooden balcony for you to sit out on. BBQ area outside and a... "A beautiful place to stay in the middle of one of the most spectacular places on earth. The large windows in the front of the Purple Cow capture the spectacular view into a warm and friendly place to relax in the Southern Alps of New Zealand. It is hard to find fault with the Purple Cow. Even the location is optimal. It is easy to find the Purple Cow on the corner of the main downtown..."Holly's Backpackers is a small, friendly place (with twenty-four beds) well-located within Wanaka. It's a member of the BBH club, so remember to bring your card if you have one (it will save you a few dollars a night). For such a small hostel it is well-equipped and comes with stunning views of the mountains around Wanaka, though no lake view.

Fern Tree Lodge is a small hostel near the centre of Wanaka (which itself is small!) and is one of about five hostels in Wanaka. It is part of the neighbouring Fern Motel complex and occupies the next site.
The hostel is a collection of buildings, with the main house in front. All buildings are single story. This is not a party hostel and is for those who want a quiet place...
