Playa del Carmen is the second-largest of the tourist and resort towns on the Mexican-Caribbean coastline. It is a really nice beach, but most people come to Playa del Carmen for the constant party, mostly down Fifth Avenue. On the plus side, Playa del Carmen is centrally located to areas such as Cancun and Tulum so you can take a collectivo in either direction if you decide to do a day trip to either of these destinations.
In Playa del Carmen itself, there is a spider monkey sanctuary that you can go and visit to learn about the kinds of animals that live in and among the jungle areas of this part of the country. You can also catch the ferry from here over to the island of Cozumel, where you can hang out for the day or spend a couple of days. The area contains several cenotes where you can go and snorkel; some of them also offer diving for those who are PADI certified. For those who love adventure parks, there are also a few of these scattered along the highway in and around Playa del Carmen.
Hostels in Playa del Carmen are abundant and scattered throughout the city center. Most of them are close to the beach and all of your major amenities that you may need during your stay.
