This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Oberhausen.

Oberhausen is a middle-sized city in the Ruhr Region of Germany, located between Duisburg and Essen. The city is perhaps best known for its industrial landmark Gasometer Oberhausen and supposedly the largest shopping mall in Europe.

With the population of slightly more than two hundred thousand and not exactly the strongest tourism in the country, the Oberhausen hostel options are very limited, but if you are traveling there to check out the city and its main sights you most likely won't need more than a day or two anyway.

Most tourists come to Oberhausen to see the Gasometer Oberhausen. It is a former, more than a hundred-meter-high gas holder turned into a magnificent exhibition space. The entrance fees are quite reasonable and you can get an amazing view of the city from the top of the building. The city is also a home to the largest shopping mall in Europe with more than two hundred twenty stores, called CentrO. Another quite popular attraction is a Sea Life Centre, which was the home of Paul the Octopus, the famous common octopus that was used to predict the results of soccer matches. There are also some interesting sights for history lovers like the Castle Oberhausen with the Ludwig Gallery and a couple of museums. In case you are visiting with kids, you probably should not miss visiting the Zoo and Aquapark.

There is a train station in the city, which is also served by Intercity and Eurocity trains, and an international airport in Düsseldorf, located just about thirty kilometers from Oberhausen, so arriving with public transportation is not a problem. The city also has a solid public transport network, consisting of buses and trams, which makes moving around Oberhausen comfortable and easy.
