Gudhjem is not the sleepy village it was twenty years ago. The grain storage building is gone now and the harbor area has a few more restaurants. The large open surface where fishermen used to repair their nets has not changed much. I can imagine my grandfather there as a boy, helping his father bring in the catch and carting it home, ready for the family women and elders to smoke the herring the next day. The Gudhjem train station history and art museum is absolutely precious. The modern art museum just north of Gudhjem is another local treasure. I love the architecture, the simplicity of the long building as it steps its way down the slope to the sea, with a trickle of water running from floor to floor and down each stairway. How wonderful it must be to sail from Sweden to Gudhjem, tie up in the harbor, and adjourn for a pleasant lunch with wine before turning in for the night. I liked the thought of walking on cobblestone streets my grandfather walked on as a boy, and now my son has walked there, too. — john jensen, Kensington, CA USA
