Get to know Thunder Bay (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Thunder Bay.

Thunder Bay is a small city located far away from most of the other major city centers in Ontario. Thunder Bay hostels are located downtown, but a car is recommended both in traveling here due to the remote location and lack of public transport to get around. With a car you will be able to reach the bountiful nature located just outside the town. Hostel staff will be able to give you information on local sights as well as festivals but a quick check online for current events is recommended.

Thunder Bay is a nature and ski lovers' paradise. Ski hills are a short drive away and offer challenging and exciting ski slopes for all levels from first timers to the most experienced. The local area is also home to countless breathtaking cross-country skiing trails and snowshoeing adventures. Dog sledding and snowmobile companies offer unforgettable tours and packages during the winter months.

Thunder Bay rests on Lake Superior, the biggest of the Great Lakes. In the summer, sailing, canoeing and kayaking are common activities and a must-do for boating and water lovers. Enjoy a sailing lesson and then have dinner on the pier at one of the many restaurants.

On Saturday morning, a leisurely stroll through the town's farmers market is a tasty and artistic way to kick off the weekend. The market sells delicious treats, fresh bread, and local produce as well as their famous mustard. Many artists set up little stalls and shop to sell their wares. The market changes seasonally to showcase the current crops and crafts.
