Neighborhoods in Vienna

Looking for a specific district? Here you go:

Get to know Vienna (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Vienna.

Guess what? Vienna is also named and spelled Wien - It is the same destination. Goodbye confusion.

Vienna is the capital of Austria and Waltz capital of the world. It consists of 23 districts which all have unique features.

If you are looking for a hostel in Vienna, focus on the districts 1 to 9 since they are the inner city ones with most attractions. The most central but also most expensive is district 1 (Inner City) which boasts with shopping, museums and, of course, the famous Staatsoper (state opera). By the way, standing room tickets are sold on the day of performance and will cost you only 2 euros!

If you are looking for a cheaper Vienna hostel option, districts 5 (Margareten), 6 (Mariahilf), and 7 (Neubau) are your best bet. All three of them are equally beautiful and still close to the city center. It will barely take you 10 minutes to get to the center from your hostel by bus or tram. If you have time, visit a Heuriger (a typical Austrian restaurant that serves hearty food and wine) in one of the outlying districts.

Public transport is readily available and a fast and convenient way to get to your Vienna hostel and around. But be warned, you must validate your ticket when you get on the bus or train! It's an unusual system, they don't make that very clear, and they target confused tourists with large fines that you have to pay on the spot if they didn't validate their ticket.

Try walking as much as you can though to enjoy stunning architecture and the Vienna way of live. Another fun way to get around in the city center is to take a horse carriage which is particularly pleasant on a sunny day. To get to your hostel in Vienna from the airport, just take a fast train (CAT) which departs frequently from the city center.
