"HI - Fremantle Hostel - Backpackers Inn - Freo YHA Hostel is huge! Housing up to one hundred-forty people, YHA Freo is one of few hostels in Fremantle, just twenty-two kilometers from Perth. Fremantle is a popular summer destination due to its beaches and coastal character, therefore booking and planning ahead are vital during the summer months.  "The Sundancer is a really colourful hostel with a nice open-plan living area on the first floor---pool tables, Internet cafe, fireplace, ping pong tables, kitchen, and reception are all connected. They provide a lot of nice extra services so you don't have to leave the hostel if you don't want to. These include a residents-only bar at the reception, a heated spa (hot tub to North Americans)...

"The Old Firestation Backpackers is a beautiful old fire station building dating back to 1907, and the fire pole is still there. There is an Indian Restaurant downstairs, which serves discounted meals for backpackers in the evening from $3.50 (the food is very good). The hostel itself is well-equipped for backpackers. There is a huge common room with free pool table and wide screen TV and...

"I lived in Perth for about five years between the years of 1990 and 1995, and I stayed for lengthy periods at Ocean View Lodge, for a total of more than three years all added up. I enjoyed my stay at the hostel, and the closeness to all the amenities of Freo, along with the diversity of the people. No matter where else I stayed in Perth, to me Ocean View Lodge always felt like home, and I kept...

Sunday 4:30 p.m, don't want to pay 400 zillion dollars for a kilo of tomatoes at the supermarket? Go to the Freo Markets up the Capuccino Strip, at 4:30 all the sellers cut their prices and the Market is only open Fri-Sunday. Bargains? The other day we got about 8 or 9 kilos of fruit and veges for 14 bucks.

Summer sizzles in Freo. Live on the cheap. Find yourself a nice dorm room. The average hostel puts the hottest clubs to shame. Do the odd day treck to South beach, Cottesloe beach or Rottnest Island. Make a pot of sweet chilli mussels, they'll cost about 6 bucks a kilo, kick back lissen to some tunes (K+D sessions), drink beer, be merry, and soak up the sun. The cheapest cooked brekky I know in Freo is Cafe Presto in front of the hospital, $6.50 bacon, eggs, toast, tomatoes, and tea or coffee. But the best quality most incredible value for the money meal is The Quadrant Pizzeria on High Street. Grace and Claude make real pizza, their vegetarian, Sicilian, Calabrese and meat lovers are awesome, their carbonara or salmon pasta dishes are divine, 10 bucks all you can eat, for desert you get a special treat. B.Y.O. beer or delicious with Evans and Tate Gnangara shiraz, a very palatable beer drinkers wine ;-). As for coffee, the Merchant Cafe is slowly sending my mate Alex broke. Need some nice threads on a budget, Diamond Aps on Wray avenue, turn 2nd left past the hospital. Best Fish and Chips is Joes Fish Shack, $11.50 for a seafood basket.

Fremantle is a breath of fresh air. It has a quirky vibe, anything goes! Beautiful climate, beaches, historic buildings... Here's my TOP 10 to-do's for Freo: (in no order) 1. Fremantle Markets, get a beer at the market bar and listen to the buskers. 2. Definitely do the night-time Prison tour, its excellent. 3. Go to Little Creatures for a pale ale and frites, you'll love it. 4. Get the ferry to Rottnest Island, its so pretty... but don't feed the quokas! 5. Get a caffeine fix on Cappucino strip, Gino's and Benny's do great coffee. 6. Old Shanghai foodhall opposite markets does great food, cheap (especially Taka's Japanese). 7. Jump on the free bus (it's orange and has CAT written on it). 8. Shopping... cool clothes and jewellery by local designers. 9. Go see a band in the Newport, or DJs in Norfolk. 10. Seafood haven... some os the best in the world (according to the locals!). Go to Fishing boat Harbour, for fish 'n chips.
