Get to know Ushuaia (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Ushuaia.

Ushuaia is a friendly town at the very tip of the South American continent – you can’t get much further south than this without going to Antarctica. It started life as a penal colony (the former prison is now a museum), but these days it plays host to travelers of all types, from the independent backpackers who just want to reach “El Fin del Mundo”, to the Antartica-bound cruise passengers, and everyone in between.

The town itself is pleasant enough, but the real draw is its setting. Tucked in the edge of the Beagle Channel in Tierra del Fuego, it’s surrounded by snow-capped peaks and offers access to spectacular hiking and boat trips in the area. The climate is variable, and even in the summer may not be warm, so come prepared with warm clothing and rain gear.

Ushuaia has no central bus station but you will probably disembark somewhere in the center of town if arriving by bus. If arriving by air, you’ll need to take a taxi from the airport, which is inexpensive.

Ushuaia hostels are numerous and are scattered throughout the center of town. Facilities vary, so it`s worth shopping around to find somewhere you like. It’s advisable to book ahead during January and February, as beds fill up quickly and there’s really nowhere else to turn if you can’t find a place to sleep in Ushuaia!
