Get to know Columbus (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Columbus.

Columbus, the capital of Ohio, is considered the largest city in the state. Now a large metropolitan area with a range that encompasses several counties, it began with humble origins as a French colony under the name of "Ohio Country."

Originally a sort of moderately-sized trading post for fur traders and hunters, it fell under the rule of the British Empire in the late eighteenth century, until it came under the rule of the United States itself, which founded the state of Ohio early in the nineteenth century. Then prone to political infighting amongst its ruling class, Columbus later experienced a marked growth by the twentieth century, which spelled its slow rise to renown, a status that remains to this day. Touring Columbus is like touring a living museum; the majority of its sights are remnants of historical buildings that date back to the early foundation of the city.

Today, Columbus is well known for its many art galleries, restaurants, and its excellent nightlife. One of the best places to go to while on your sojourn to Columbus is the Short North, considered one of the most popular neighborhoods chiefly due to the large number of art galleries, grub houses, and saloons that populate the area.

For nature lovers, the Franklin Park Observatory and the Columbus Zoo are excellent places to be, with sprawling verdant scenery and the often-unexpected combination of plant life and modern art, which makes it a true feast for the senses. If you’re looking for great places to find excellent food, the North Market just south of Short North should regale you with its wide selection of local and foreign cuisine, with just the right number of eateries for every palate and budget.

Being a large and bustling metropolis, staying in Columbus hostels, hotels, or bed-and-breakfasts can be difficult and expensive even in the off seasons. Because of its large population, booking for places in advance is a must. When combined with package deals, you not only save yourself the often budget-breaking cost of staying in classy places, but you also allow yourself the rare treat of experiencing the high life as only Columbus can offer without breaking the bank.

While there are affordable Columbus hostels, motels, and B&Bs available in the city proper and well beyond the city’s limits (a half-hour or so drive away), these tend to become fully booked regardless of the season, and booking on holidays becomes more difficult. In order to ensure a hassle-free vacation, online bookings at least a week or two before your arrival date is a must.
