Get to know New Paltz (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in New Paltz.

New Paltz is a sizable village located in Ulster County, New York, with six thousand-plus residents. If you’re looking for a small place to experience a little bit of history interspersed with just the right kind dose of modernity, New Paltz is a good place to stay in a hostel for a couple nights. Known throughout New York and the whole country as a place that takes its education seriously, New Paltz is home to the State University of New York New Paltz -- not only an excellent village to be if you’re looking for a low-profile spot to earn a killer degree, but also a place with great historical sights.

New Paltz keeps its humble history alive with the Huguenot Street -- a relatively small area of land that still features the remnants of the earliest settlements from the seventeenth century built by the founding families of the village. New Paltz still showcases its periodic amenities, with its railways (La Stazione, originally Wallkill Valley Railroad) still retaining a somewhat classic air compared to the modernization that is otherwise evident in throughout the rest of the village.

If you’re hankering for something a little more modern, New Paltz also features rustic, home-style eateries, bed-and-breakfasts, and a number of excellent restaurants, pubs, and good local breweries that stay true to the tradition of New Paltz alcohol. While New Paltz is not exactly a party-goer’s paradise, it is a great place to relax and unwind after months of being stuck with the hubbub of the city proper. Not only do they provide wholesome, hearty traditional meals, but the original influx of settler "culture" also imbues their cuisine with a distinct gustatory zest all its own.

One of the highlights of being in New Paltz is in its annual Halloween Festival, which is held in Hasbrouck Park and is a joint effort of all local residents. Something of a tradition in itself, this Halloween celebration was originally held by the Guenther family in their personal property every All Hallows Eve, but was later discontinued due to the unmanageability which was garnered by the large interest in the fete. It was later relocated to the more public-friendly Hasbrouck Park, where the revelries continue to this day.

New Paltz is also an excellent place to be in for individuals who like to delve into the spooky side of things. With a city that truly loves its ghoulies, New Paltz boasts not only a free-for-all Halloween party, but a Halloween-themed parade, and its Night of a Hundred Pumpkins, which showcases the best in artisanal pumpkin carving. The highlight of its scare-fest is the historically reputed haunted Huguenot Street, which is said to come alive with tormented spirits and ghosts every Halloween. Tours to the Haunted Huguenot Street, as well as New Paltz hostel accommodations for its Halloween revelries are easily had at all times of the year, although advance booking can help to smooth things along.
