Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Slovenia

Slovenia is a beautiful country to visit. One of the ex-Yugoslavian countries, Slovenia was not much affected by the war that followed for the other countries in the region. While the others endured nasty wars for years, Slovenia managed to separate relatively peacefully with only a ten day conflict.

The capital city of Slovenia is Ljubljana. It is quite a small city but has a really nice charm to it. You can take a walking tour around the city centre and visit many of the sights. They have the famous cannon that rings out at noon every day from the clock tower just around the corner from the Museum of Broken Relationships. The Austro-Hungarian architecture of the buildings and churches from the Ottoman empire is also quite impressive. There are quite a number of buildings here that were designed by the famous architect Jože Plečnik, which are considered to be works of art around the city. Climbing to the top of the fortification at sunset also gives a great view over the city. Most of the attractions can be visited within a day or two. There are hostels scattered around in different parts of the city. Most of them are within walking distance of the centre as the city is quite small. The bus station is on the outskirts of town, so if you are looking for one close to the hostel, make sure you do your research.

The second most popular destination for people to visit in Slovenia is Lake Bled. It is a stunning lake that has loads of different activities, swimming areas, markets, historical sites and walking trails to check out. Do be wary that activities around the lake are well regulated. There are designated areas for particular activities that are banned in other parts of the lake. Taking a boat over to the island in the middle of the lake is one of the top activities recommended to do in Lake Bled. There are also some historical sites along the trails off the lake and up the hills that you can explore. There are hostels all around the main area where the buses arrive in the town as well as in the areas surrounding the roads leading into Lake Bled. There are no hostels on the opposite side of the lake. When you book a hostel for the night, make sure that you are close to the bus station, within walking distance, or have your own vehicle.

There are quite a number of other towns in Slovenia that have hostels. Most of these are more scattered about the smaller towns in the northern part of the country in and around the mountains. There are also a few places that have hostels along the small section of coastline Slovenia has, especially in and around Koper.

The buses that run from the capital go to most of the major tourist destinations. If you are entering Slovenia from another country, you may have to go to the capital first before boarding a bus that will take you to where you are looking to go. So sit back and enjoy the ride through Slovenia!
