Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Saxony-Anhalt

The region of Saxony-Anhalt is located in Eastern Germany and has the country’s highest density of World Cultural Heritage Sights in one area. It is a landlocked and rural region, meaning that you can only access its rich culture and history by flying to nearby airports in Saxony or Hanover. However, you can easily travel by train, and the road is also safe to travel by.

Whilst half of Saxony-Anhalt is made up of plains, farms, forests and sweeping open spaces, the other half grows into the beautiful Harz mountains. This area is famous for its many tiny villages hidden in the mountains and forests. What attracts visitors is the medieval town of Quedlinburg, a pretty place with half-timbered buildings that offers up the opportunity to ski, hike or cycle around the mountains.

But staying in this area for a reasonable price can be difficult, as cheap accommodation like hostels are hard to find. Instead, you could stay in the city of Magdeburg. The capital city of Saxony-Anhalt offers up a range of more popular hostel options for travellers interested in the Gothic cathedral and Romanesque monastery that you will find here. The best time to visit is between May and September, when the weather is warmer.

You can also find hostels in Halle. There are more choices available for hostel guests here, including more private rooms for four people -- of course at a higher rate per night. Halle is an important industrial area, with many greenhouses and vineyards. Many students come to the region for Martin Luther University, making the population much younger and culturally diverse. You will find more English speakers here, and better quality accommodation.

Saxony-Anhalt was home to both Martin Luther and George Frideric Handel, and so can happily portray itself as a region teeming with history. Come in June, when the Handel festival is on, or visit the Europe-Rosarium in Sangerhausen, the world’s largest collection of roses. Whenever you visit, the region is sure to offer up something from the past to entice you.

The region has so much to offer to budget travellers looking for a world of culture and Medieval influence, that it is nearly impossible to pick. With so much to do and see, visitors of Saxony-Anhalt may find themselves happily exhausted in their hostel rooms at night, knowing that the next day brings even more adventure.
