Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Wyoming

Wyoming has two different regions with hostels, Lovell in the north which doesn't have a great deal to do, and Jackson Hole, which is the gateway town to the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Parks. To be able to explore these regions fully you can either book tours from your hostel in the Jackson Hole in the peak travel months or you are going to need a car. In Jackson Hole itself, there is an abundance of outdoor activities to get involved in, especially white water rafting.

As you travel north from here you will see the amazing peaks of the Grand Tetons National Park and you can stop of and do some incredible hiking in and around this region as you make your way up to Yellowstone National Park.

Yellowstone was the first official National Park in all of the United States. It is home to spectacular volcanic features such as Old Faithful geyser and the Mammoth Hot Springs. You can spend a good couple of days driving around and exploring the amazing colours and features of the land. There is also an abundance of wildlife here and you can run into bears and bison in the peak season.

Up in the north, close to Lovell is the town of Cody which is not only home to the United States largest rodeo, but also to the museum of the famous Buffalo Bill. There is a state park around here that is named after him as well as a reservoir to visit too.

If you are continuing east of here, make sure that you make a stop off at the famous Devils Tower National Monument. This was basically a giant plug of a volcano and the long pillar formations are unlike anything you will see around the world. You can spend a night here under the stars and watch Close Encounters of The Third Kind, a popular movie in the 1970's which stars the monument as an alien homing device. Also take a walk around the base and get up close to it.

Take your time and take a car as you go through Wyoming, and maybe stay a little while at one of the hostels. It is the best way to properly explore some of the most unique nature that you will ever see of anywhere in the world.
