BedBugs
Yes it turns out to be true that there are bedbugs in the rooms. The staff were strange and they did not really want to take the payment from us -- was kind of hard to pay for the room. You can never understand who is responsible for the reception.

Awful
This B and not Breakfast is really well situated but this is the only positive think I can say. The room was disgusting, no air conditioner, the weather was very hot and we had to open the window then we were attacked by mosquitoes. I don't recommend it, besides it's very expensive.

Bed and breakfast but no breakfast!
I did not enjoy my stay at this hostel, but still I have to say that the location is amazing. They told me there was no breakfast, even if it is clearly mentioned that it is included. The building is very old, the staff is strange, the beds are the most uncomfortable bed I had out of all hostels during my trip to europe. Even though my trip to venice was great and I have been able to sleep directly on the island. By the way you can walk there when you arrive at the train station, you don't have to pay for the waterboat, it is only twenty minutes' walk.

Stayed there in January '07. They had installed a new kitchen. The old one was still on the balcony. The new fridge worked fine. No microwave. But so sorry, the new oven wasn't connected to the gas net. When? Maybe tomorrow, the staff said on the first day of my stay. Next day -- same question, same answer! One staff-member is always present, and mostly online. May let a female use the internet as well. The friendliness of the staff was ok, but not charming. White sheets were clean, but blankets were thin. You better bring your own. Our dorm wasn't cleaned during the three days of my stay, not even the dustbin. the heater worked fine. The included breakfast is a real italian one. You may have it in the café next door. Finaly I think i've seen worse hostels, but a lot of better ones as well!

In the seven weeks we traveled through Europe staying in budget accommodations, this place was by far the worst. We reserved a double private room. We got an apartment that was separate from the hostel that had a kitchen and bathroom, but it did not look like it had been cleaned in years. It was down an alley that was filled with mosquitos and bird droppings, and was quite dark at night. The room had no fan or airconditioning and we could not open the windows because of the mosquitos. The shower, including the shower curtain was covered in mold.

The two guys attending, I have no idea if they were the owners or not, consisted of a sleazy older guy (here's a tip, don't pat your single female travellers on the back in the room you're showing them!) and a younger and extremely vague guy -- this must be the stoned person. Payment in advance. no towells at all. Evidently they have rooms in various buildings, as I was around the corner. Room ok, sheets appeared clean, bathrooms shared and dirty with lots of messages about cleaning up after yourself (fine with leaving a bathroom clean but I think the cleaning could come out of the Euro eighty dollar room charges!). the one place in Italy I didn't like at all. Oh, also I had left my bags behind and collected them later in the day, only to find on my return to Roma that I had left behind a skirt in the room. No mention of that when I picked up my stuff some hours later, presumably after the room was cleaned. Too expensive and not good!

After having previously stayed at this property three years ago we were extremely disappointed this time. The so called "bed and breakfast" is no more now than a poor quality hostel and no longer deserves a high rating. We stayed in our overly hot room for eight days. In this time our bed was never made or changed. We had to beg for a clean towel each, and the bin lid was extremely grotty, as was the lower shower edges. The bedrooms no longer have large beds or furniture, not even a place on which to place your case. Not one glass or cup was provided in our room from which we could drink. Breakfast was a stale overly dried-out croissant and one only cup of coffee provided at the cafe below. No guests were allowed to choose from the current day's display of pastries. The kitchen was short of crockery, glasses and cups. The stove was quite likely unsafe and difficult to light. No lighter was provided and when asked for assistance the manager answered, without turning to face me front on. He informed me that didn't know how to light the stove, nor did he know if the stove in fact worked. It was made quite clear, in a most rude manner that he had no interest in assisting anyone in anyway. I found it difficult to believe this person is the manager and is in fact Italian. He had no respect for his guests at all! I would not recommend this hostel to anyone again. It completely spoiled our visit to Venice. Three years ago we had left this property recommending it to other travelers.... How times have changed with new management! Sincerely, Francine and Giuseppe Rizza, Australia. P.s. I sent a copy of this report to the owner, needless to say I got no reply. So much for customer care. Does anyone out there know if there is some authority in Venice that a complaint can be sent to? They claim to have won awards for their accommodation! We paid $160.00 Australian dollars per night to stay at this dreadful place! By the way the pictures of the rooms shown (beautiful white bedspreads, lampshades and wall décor) are relevant to 2002. It isn't at all like this now. As I said we stayed here previously, we came again because of the quality of accommodation. Such a pity it has been ruined. My e-mail address has been supplied if anyone would like to contact me. I am really annoyed about this place! Cheers Francine

Well, what can I say about this B&B!!! For starters I have done a lot of travelling and I don't mind slumming it to save a few pounds. But this place was by far the worst accommodation I have ever stayed in. I had planned a romantic few days in Venice, and the photos of the B&B were fantastic. The rooms looked clean and the area was ideal. But on arrival we found what looked like a run down crack house. We turned up late at night and didn't see any life in the place. Luckily the guy who was running was drinking at the bar outside! Our room was in a separate building around the corner, which looked so dodgy. There was one working light in the whole place, which was a flickering lamp in the bedroom. The room was so stark, only one hard double bed, no bin, no hot water and certainly not like the picture. But the guy was so stoned I don't think he really cared he was running such a hellhole. Breakfast was a measly croissant and coffee from the bar next door. The streets smelt and I certainly didn't feel safe. Even the destination wasn't that great as it was noisy and dirty. Oh and I forgot how expensive B&B Rota is!!!

There was just something very awkward about the whole place - the owner did not want to give us a three-bedroom apartment, even though we had three people. The bathroom had water everywhere. The beds were find, but mostly, the owner was just odd.

I think this is an excellent place to stay, the location is superb and you are forced to learn more about Venice because you have to find it! Once found though, you are home. The management does not allow a charge card, so I was fortunate that we could make our reservation over hostelz.com even though we could not easily double-check our reservation. I was a bit torqued by no reduction in fees due to the lack of towels our first night, but, as the owner said, "This is Venice." It is, and I'll be back.

My family (daughter, 13; son, 15; wife??, me!!) arrived here June 16 and departed two days later on June 18, 2004. It was a challenge to find this hostel, but fantastic as that meant we had to explore the city by foot and water. Once we had registered, we put the mattresses on the floor for better sleep. B&B Rota was in an excellent location, and we covered as much as possible in the full day that we were there. We were not given towels initially because Luciano was not present, and the guest receptionist did not know where they were. If we could have stayed longer, we would have, and I look forward to returning in the future.

The guys who are in charge of this hostel were really interesting. When I first checked in, I had offered to pay up front for my bed (cash only and I wanted a receipt). The guy wasn't too eager to go through the paperwork (if any; all he had to do was check my name off, take the payment and write out a simple receipt). He kept saying "no problem, no problem! Pay tonight, pay tomorrow." I pretty much insisted that they take my money. Now that I think about it, I probably could have left without paying!! He pretty much rushed through the whole meet and greet period. I guess he had better things to do. You get your own keys, so no lockout or curfews. They also offer free breakfast at the cafe downstairs (coffee and a croissant). Between 7 and 9 at night, the cafe will comp you a drink of your choice (free wine!) and offer 5 euro dinner (which I didn't try). For a 600-year old building, this place was pretty decent. No cracking walls, rotten wood beams, or creepy insects to speak of. Beds were comfortable (based on the apparent laziness of the owners, I'd suggest using your own sleep sack, just in case!), and the dorm rooms were comfy. The bathrooms were okay (I'm just not too big a fan of shower curtains). Toilet paper isn't replenished as quickly as it's used. Internet isn't free. But, there's a decent sized kitchen that you can use and a nice patio for you to hang out in (it closes at 11 p.m.). Great location — it's near the Rialto and the Pescheria.
