Avis de Hostelz.com
This is an excellent hostel in every aspect except for its location. It's right on the Vltava riverbank on the southern outskirts of Prague and will not show up on most tourist maps. There is a nice view across the river though and it is a calm and quiet area next to a golf course.

It's a 5 minutes walk from the hostel to the tram/bus stop Cerny Kun, and another 15 minutes by tram (3 or 17) to the city centre. This should not be a problem with the reliable day/night public transport and cheap weekly passes. The path to the tram stop is not lit at night however.

The staff (the boathouse "ladies") are extremely friendly and helpful, taking great care to ensure travellers are settled and comfortable. They are more of motherly/sisterly figures rather than "staff".

The atmosphere feels home-like and family-oriented. The guests here are generally young backpackers, but during out stay there were a few retired pensioners and two complete families with teenage kids. Don't expect a wild party, this is more of a guitar and sing-along place.

The rooms and beds are clean and comfortable with carpeted floors. The pine double-deckers are a bit rickety, but the beds are extremely comfortable. Perhaps the only disappoint is that there are just two power points in each 8-bed room. You get a large locker in the shower room after checking in. Everyone gets room and main door keys and there is no curfew.

The showers are in separate male and female rooms. The male showers are communal and the female showers are curtained divided. The showers/toilets are very clean. The dining/common area is very large and the walls are full of written compliments from previous guests.

There are a variety of snacks and drinks (and local beer) for sale at very reasonable prices. The ladies will serve home-cooked dinners (120 Kc) of soup, main course and sometimes dessert that are tasty and excellent value for money. Some postcards, a pen, and a map are given on arrival. Apparently tram/bus tickets are available as well. The superb breakfast consists of a selection of local hams, cheeses (solid cheese not spreads), yogurt, and fresh fruits, in addition to the customary cereal, toast, juice and coffee/tea. If you are still hungry they also offer additional breakfast (mainly eggs done different ways) for 30 Kc.

This is definitely one of the best hostels around and we recommend it.

Great hostel!
I stayed in this hostel for five days in September and had a great stay there. It's not in the center, but the public transport is very good and easy, so that's not a problem at all. The ladies are all very lovely -- they even gave us a breakfast the evening before our departure, since we had to leave early to catch our plane. The walls of the hostel are filled with messages from people who have stayed there and it's really cosy. The sanitary is very clean and nice too and the home-cooked dinner is really good. I really loved it there and I recommend this hostel to everyone.

Home away from home.
What can we say? This was the best place to stay in Prague when we stayed there. Mind you, that was in 1992, but it looks like things haven't changed one bit. Vera and Helena, we still think fondly of you and the times that we had at the boathouse. It's great to see that you are still going strong and bringing joy to so many. Thank you so much for your kindness and hospitality and for making our stay in Prague so enjoyable and so memorable. We met so many great people here.

Amazing, best ive ever been in
The boathouse is a bit far from the station, but dont let that scare you. its worth the journey. located on the side of the river its nice and quiet. the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. after two months of traveling it was nice to have a place to relax and get drunk cheaply for a few days. Directions -- There are three stations in prague. two look like real stations, one will make you wonder where the hell the train stopped. if your at the third, your probably coming from the south. catch the subway to either the central or northern station. i came from the central station so i only know how to get there from that one, sorry. buy your ticket first. transit cops are everywhere and its 70 bucks if you dont. exit station and head strait out across the field. keep going down the street opposite the station until you hit the tram line. wait for the #3. its about a twenty-minute ride so be patient. take the tram to station in description -- it looks like a bombed out graffiti mess but dont let that deter you. head down from station and turn left when the ramp leads to the road. follow the signs straight towards the hostel.

Why isn't such a place closer to downtown?
The hostel is great! The ladies are lovely, the breakfast is awesome (you will only feel hungry again in the afternoon!), but the location -- well, what can I say? It is by the river, very calm and safe (I arrived everyday around 9 or 10 p.m. and had to walk around ten minutes from the tram stop through a path not well lit, but honestly it is really safe). So this is great. The bad part is it takes around forty minutes to reach downtown -- you have to walk around ten minutes from the hostel to the tram stop, then thirty more minutes in the tram). It is nice because you can see the city and you are not in the middle of the mass and noise, but after doing that for five days, I had the impression I was commuting. but the place is very clean, quiet (you can really sleep), has good food, and you meet nice people there. Guys, the shower is communal (showers for four guys together). I do not think that is an issue at all, but if you like privacy, just go out of the peak hours.

Great Place!
The hostel is a way from downtown. Takes you twenty-five minutes or so to get there, but well worth the trouble. Sits on a river with a very quite and relaxing surroundings. The staff is amazing, run by the some great women who will bend over backwards for you. They cook every night for a cheap price tag. The rooms are nice and not bunk beds (finally). Great common room, where you are sure to find some friends. Great place all around.

A hostel your parents could love!
I first got to Prague in early '93 and the Boathouse was my first stop! Yep, it's far from the center but Vera and Helena were sweethearts and den mothers to a motley group of young Americans, Australians, Irish, and English travelers who somehow ended up staying there for months and months (Prague's like that). That was the beginning of a three-year Prague adventure. I'm thrilled to see that Vera and Helena are still there, welcoming new initiates!

An all around excellent hostel -- the only downside is that it is located at least twenty-five minutes from essentially anything. but at the same time, depending on what you are looking for, maybe this remoteness is actually a plus. Anyway, the decor is pleasant, as are the ever-helpful "czech moms" who will help you out with any questions about prague you might have, as well as cook you a nice, restaurant quality dinner if you wish, for only a small fee (a few dollars -- much cheaper than even a fast-food place and quite a bargain). They also have a cat running around, for those of us (like me) who love animals. Anyway, it fulfills quite well all the functions that a hostel should, and adds a pleasant (albeit kinda distant) location along a river that I cannot pronounce or spell (some long czech name) and is also quite reasonably priced.

Nice place, extremely helpful and friendly staff. Amazing breakfast. You have to ride the tram into the center of town, but it's close, cheap, and reliable. The tram station and the path to the hostel are a little forlorn. The hostel is surrounded by a golf course and the river.

The best hostel in Europe! The ladies that work here are wonderful! So nice and really care about taking care of you. Kind of like your Czech mom. The breakfast is the best free breakfast I have come accross. Like a five star hotel and free! The hostel is not in the center of town but it is well worth the like twenty-cent tram ticket. Stay here.

There are some great things about this place. The ladies who run it are awesome. The breakfast especially when you pay a little bit extra is very good. The place is overall very clean. However, the location sucks. Your only way to the city is by tram. Especially late at night these trams run only about every hour. Prague is small so everything is very central. If you stay someplace more central you can hit up all the sites which are walking distance and go out and stumble back to your hostel which would be much better then taking a twenty-five minute tram ride anytime of day.

I loved this place! It's not a place to go for people who want to party, but it's so cozy, and the owners make you feel like you're at home. They even have a cat, Miki, running around. It's kind of a hike from all the stuff to do in the city (maybe a ten to fifteen minute tram ride), but it's not bad. It was hard for us to find at first. We came off of the bus and didn't know where to go! But you walk up the ramp, cross the tram tracks, and go down the other side. From there, you'll see the yellow signs to the boathouse.

My first hostel stay (I'm a Yank) and it was a VERY pleasant experience. Breakfast was EXCELLENT. Very friendly staff. Even the house cat was friendly. Any warm body available and the cat was there and more than willing to help. :):):) English is NO problem at this hostel. The ladies even advanced us tram tickets to get to town, in order to exchange our euros for Czech currency. You can't beat that with a stick. Watch out for that HUGE front deck though. We don't span our joists that far apart in America and the deck can give you a bit of a bounce as you walk. Somewhat scary, especially at night.

Excellent. You will love it! Here's my story: I started in Prague, at the Boathouse. It was the first of four countries I visited around Europe and it set the bar way up there. NO ONE comes close, dudes. Vera was the berries. See for yourself. Al, from South Africa

Very nice hostel — the staff and guests were both as nice as could be. Its location is not ideal if you're there to visit the city center — count on at least half an hour for getting anywhere. Besides that, the only downside is that there is no guest kitchen (but cheese sandwiches in the dining room always made up for that for me). A very nice hostel in all.

The hostel really keeps what it says. It's very familair, you get a wonderful breakfast, you can buy some snacks and drinks. I had a small (3 bed) room and it was quite calm in the night (only the carpet didn't appear very tidy). It takes some time to get into town but the tram runs 24h a day. Overall I had a pleasant stay.
