The Oasis Guesthouse is a haven of Western familiarity to the traveler in Ulaanbaatar, but the guesthouse in no way isolates itself from the surrounding Mongolian culture. With the traditional bunkbeds, there is also offered the option of staying in the gers -- the nomadic Mongolian form of housing. On the opposite side of the western menu -- including such foods as grilled cheese and fries and apple pie -- is one offering more local cuisine. The Oasis Guesthouse is a wonderful blend of cultures, even including a bit of Austrian flavor to represent the owners' own culture.
The Oasis Guesthouse is comprised of a two-story house along with four gers outside. There are several rooms, each holding four to six beds each with a comfortable amount of space. The gers include approximately five beds. There is a bathroom on each floor, and the showers are downstairs but are only available for a specified time each day.
Sybil and Rene, the owners, reach out to the local community by offering employment in an effort to put back some of the tourism income into the local economy. When staying there, the fee for washing clothes goes to the local women. There is even an opportunity to get a haircut!
Breakfast is included with the room and normally consists of an assortment of bread with jams and cheeses, along with tea, coffee, and dessert. The guesthouse is located on the outskirts of Ulaanbaatar, about a ten-minute tram ride into the downtown. Right across the street is a surprisingly well-stocked grocery as an added perk. The Oasis Cafe and Guesthouse is a beautifully and thoughtfully furnished establishment, and will provide an excellent experience in every way.
