The Backcountry Hostel

This hostel is great! First off, the owner is great, and gets to know his guests. Second they will do your laundry for $3/load, and you don't have to buy soap. I accidentally left $80USD in my pants, and the girl doing it returned my money. That was a big shock. Also they now have a rockin' bar downstairs, on top of the other bars in the building that are independently operated. Also this hostel is very clean, and recently remodeled. My only beef with the place is price. And this is why I gave it four stars instead of five. To pay $25CDN/night for a dorm bed is pricey for such a small town. But then again they don't require a membership for that price.

I wanted to express my total satisfaction with the people working at the Backcounty Hostel in Nelson B.C. Canada. Every time I go in B.C. I always need to make a stop in Nelson, and therefore, go to the Backcountry Hostel. In the beginning of November, I was there with two friends and we stayed two days at the Hostel. Just before leaving Nelson, I found out that my digital camera was missing with more than two hundred unforgettable pictures. So I left a message on the fridge leaving my e-mail address. And I headed for Vancouver and left a week later for New Zealand. Few days after my arrival I had an e-mail message from the Backcountry Hostel telling me that they found my digital camera! Wow! Not only that this Hostel is homey, comfortable, and is well located, but most of all, the personnel working there are dynamic, helpful, and above all honest -- such a rare quality nowadays that I thought it was worthy to be mentioned.

i stayed at this hostel before when it used to be the flying squirrel. this new incarnation is a lot of fun and clean! every dorm or private room has its own new (clean!) bathroom-shower-bath. such a change from other hostels! right on the main street made it easy to get around town, the internet cafe has some free (no charge) times during the week, ask the staff when free times are. duke the hostel owners dog is a big pile of love too, i miss him after spending a week in nelson. can't wait to go back this winter for some amazing snowboarding in the kootenays. last winter we stayed to close the season at the local ski hill with a base of three hundred seventy cms in april.
