This gem of a hostel is clean, vibrant, and a great value for the money. The décor is definitely hip and trendy, with art and cutting edge design everywhere. The hostel is a refreshing place to stay, especially after the hustle and bustle of a day in the city. There are frequently changing art exhibitions and a secure walled garden to enjoy. It seems a very popular and busy small hostel, so early reservations are strongly recommended.
The hostel comprises of one dorm for eight people and a number of private rooms. Unfortunately, payment is by cash only, although they will take your credit card details to secure your reservation. All rooms have ceiling fans, and private rooms have sinks. And towels are included and all rooms have use of the shared washroom facilities. On check-in you also receive a free city map and a booklet called "Beehive Recommends" which lists great places to visit, eat, and be entertained across the city. The reception is 24 hours, so there is no curfew.
Most of the rooms are on the first floor, though there are a couple in the basement, which is where the lounge area and kitchen can also be found. There's also free internet access and free local and national phone calls. Breakfast, packed lunches, and evening meals are available. The prices are very reasonable; for example an espresso is 50 cents, cappuccinos are €1, smoothies are €2.50, and banana bread is €1.50. While the packed lunch of a large filled ciabatta, fruit and vegetables is only €4.
The Beehive Hostel is located 5 minutes walk from Termini train station in the centre of Rome. If you fly on a no frills airline to Rome Ciampino airport, the airline buses run by Terravision drop you right by Termini (€8 single, €13 return). If you fly to the main Fiumicino airport there is also a direct train to termini for €9.50. Termini is also the nearest metro station. Once at Termini exit east on the concourse and you will find yourself facing Via Marghera. The hostel is three blocks down on your left. Ignore the street number on the right as they do not correlate (number 43 is on the other side is still on first block). The hostel entrance is a metal door in the yellow walled garden, marked only by a small hexagonal sign, and probably a poster about the latest art exhibition at the hostel. If you reach "Enjoy Rome" next door, then you have gone to far (but this friendly travel agency can give you loads of helpful advice when you first arrive and they can arrange walking tours, excursions, etc.).

The regular hostel is fine although the front desk people seem a bit snooty and rude. We stayed in the apartments and the difference between the apartments and the hostel was pretty drastic. Not at all what we expected and in a poorly lit and trash strewn area. Stay away from the apartments. And they are not at all close to the hostel, which you have to go to first to check in then walk and find the apartments. Just not very nice at all. We also suspect that we got bedbugs from them, which itch all over and are very nasty!
