It is fair to say that Adelaide Hostel offers something unique to a first-time traveler to San Francisco -- a safe haven from all the madness around! Tucked away centrally in a quite alleyway, it is the perfect resort to go back to when the City by the Bay is a little too much to take.

The building itself is fairly old and non-inspiring, and it is a hard place to find -- so make sure you navigate by map when first trying to get there. When you finally arrive you will find the staff to be friendly and helpful -- and more than willing to explain the sights and sounds, even if it seems that they would have had to do this all day. They also have a focus on security and they are happy for anyone to lock away their valuables in a safe behind their counter.

The rooms at the Adelaide Hostel are not overly spacious or new. There are a variety of dorms from which to choose and the beds are generally quite comfortable. The showers are a step up and there are also basins in some rooms which makes it easier. Overall, the place is tidy -- but not overly so.

There is also a general meeting area in front of reception with three computers available that include free internet browsing, which makes it a good hangout spot. The internet facility comes in very handy. A complimentary breakfast is provided, which is both filling and a great start to the day. It's also a great way to meet up with everyone and either recap the night before or talk about the day ahead! In fact, the whole kitchen area is very well planned and hugely spacious, which should bode well for those travelers intending to cook.

Although the location is central, it is close to the bad area of town. So make sure you know where you are going, especially at night, because it can be easy to stray. Otherwise, it's handy to get to and from all the main attractions by foot or transport.

The vibe around the whole place is rather chilled-out -- although if you want a full-on party experience, other hostels in San Francisco may be higher in that regard. But if you are after a handy and safe place, with heaps of amenities and comfortable beds, the Adelaide Hostel might be just for you.

Nice hostel with the exception of the staff
This hostel would have been ideal if it weren't for the rude staff that work there. The location is terrific right off Union Square. The freebies are nice, including breakfast, wi-fi (and free PCs if you don't have a laptop), and movies. The hostel is kept clean and although the rooms are cramped and the walls could use a fresh coat of paint, they're adequate enough and the bathrooms are private, which is I think preferable to a set of shower stalls in a row in one room. The price is also reasonable. With all those good things going for it, it's a shame that the staff are so terrible. They have a lot of attitude and don't know how to handle the most basic of concerns. No matter what you ask, it'll seem to them like an inquisition. So unfortunately I won't return to or recommend this hostel, despite its many attractions.

Good
The hostel is located on an uphill and in a small back lane. If you are arriving at night and are a female, it could be a little scary to walk to the hostel. There is no lift so you would have to carry your luggage up a flight of stairs. However, the staffs are very friendly and helpful and did offer help to carry my luggage. The common hall is large and beautifully decorated. Breakfast is free and unlimited and is served at the kitchen which is quite spacious and furnished with a TV. I find the bedroom small and a little squeeze for three persons. At night it could be quite noise with all the sounds of sirens and construction work. The bedroom also does not have any lockers but the lockers were located at the corridors outside the bedrooms. The bathrooms are small and not that clean. The hostel provides free internet access which I find very impressive as most other hostels charged for the internet use. Daily shuttle is available for $45 per person, which is cheaper than other hostels that usually charge for $50. Airport shuttle can also be arranged for $9 per person compared to outside prices of $11 and $14. I would recommend this place if you are not too fussy about the small rooms, staircase, and the location.

Good but crap reservation system
The Adelaide Hostel is a good place to stay, the staff were friendly and helpful, the breakfast fills you up for the rest of the day, and they had Tetley tea! But i only booked for two nights with a view of possibly moving as i did not know the hostel or area having never been to San Francisco before, after the first two booked nights, i had to go down every morning between 8:30 and 9 as you couldn't make reservations to stay for more nights whilst being there, which seemed really ridiculous. My third morning of going down to ask to stay another night i was told sorry we have no rooms available, you'll have to find somewhere else to stay! The search for a new room began and everywhere was booked, there where loads of conventions and concerts on this particular weekend, i contacted hotels -- the best quote was $450! I i ended up sleeping on the floor at another hostel! The moral of the story is if you make a reservation with the Adelaide for all of your stay you shouldn't have a problem, but if you don't you aren't guaranteed a room even if you are already staying there.

Great location
I was dubious about whether or not to stay at the Adelaide. Having done so however, I can safely say that my stay here was fine. The hostel is welcoming and not at all shabby. The only slight problems are that there aren't many showers so be prepared to queue and the stairs are a killer! However with free breakfast, free internet use, and free washing powder -- what more could you ask! The hostel itself is also in a great location, being only about two blocks from Union Square -- great for shopping!

Very central, close to Union Square but also right beside a dodgy area in the other direction. Communal areas all fine, with the lounge in particular looking like it belonged in a hotel. But the rooms were not that nice and the bed linen didn't look clean. More bathrooms are needed for the number of people and they were not that clean. The free breakfast of bagels, bread, croissants, spreads, and coffee was great. Perhaps I had been spoiled by New Zealand hostels but this one was grotty, especially in the bedrooms.

The Adelaide Hostel San Francisco was simply the best hostel I have ever been to. This hostel is so comfortable I felt like I was in a small hotel, the free breakfast was perfect -- the only hostel I have ever visited with fresh baked English Muffins and Breakfast Scones and they even have Real English tea and great coffee for the free breakfast they provide every morning.

Yikes! Be careful of this place. The reservations got messed up pretty bad. Three couples and us stayed here once and all got our reservations messed up even though we all called in separately. They put us in various flop houses in the tenderloin area. Not good and not safe. Some drunk was hitting on my wife in the hall. We all had a really bad trip.

I stayed here for four days, and it's the best hostel I've stayed in so far. Convenient location, beautiful common areas, free Internet and breakfast were excellent. Very comfortable atmosphere, I really enjoyed my stay here.

I just came back from S.F. (as a matter of fact,last night) and would like to comment on this very fine hostel. As many people have already noted, it's in an excellent location, within walking distance (approx. 1 blk.) to the famous trolley's and public buses. From what I've gathered, after speaking to one of the owners yesterday, PJ, the place is in the process of being remodeled, but hasn't been finished yet because they've been so busy this summer. I stayed in the Golden Gate Room, an all-female dorm that has been completely updated. This particular room contains five sets of bunkbeds, complete with separate reading lights and an outlet which can be used for recharging batteries, etc., new carpeting and two sinks that are separated from one another. Outside of the (Golden Gate) room are three bathrooms that have been completely remodeled, each containing separate showers. The room is also located next to the lunch room, which has also been updated with granite countertops, a large cooler where people store their food, maple cabinets that are clearly marked with labels specifying what utensils are stored in them. And they offer a free breakfast, all sorts of breads and jams to choose from. Another nice touch was the common room filled with (new) comfortable couches and painted in a deep burgundy. At times, I couldn't believe I was staying in a hostel! Lastly, I would've given it 5 stars but the reason I didn't was because there is no curfew and at times the noise level can get real loud in the kitchen late at night after people have come home from the bars and want to continue to party. But other than that little inconvenience, the staff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about tours, directions and even showing me around the hostel.

I have stayed at the Adelaide before, and now it is better than ever. The photos on this site are a completely out of date, as the Adelaide has been completely remodeled and is now fantastic. The new kitchen and guest common areas are the best in San Francisco. This in my opinion is the best hostel in San Francisco.

So this seems to be the tale of two hostels — one being the common areas which are beautiful and clean, the other being the rooms which are another story all together. The room we stayed in (#3) had a broken bed frame that made it feel like you are sleeping on top of a log, the TV only got 2 channels clearly (Telemundo and QVC) and the lock on the door was broken. The shower was the smallest I've ever been in and the shower knob was broken as well. But the kicker was the toilet — no windows and no lights! Good thing I brought a flashlight! All this for $74!! C'mon Adelaide, get it together.

This is one of the finest hostels I've stayed at. The staff are ever so friendly and helpful, especially David who is sweet. It is not expensive at $20 a night for a dorm bed, and free breakfast and Internet access is included. I can't wait until I return.

I stayed here with my partner and our two children aged 7 and 11. The room was pretty average but the communal parts were excellent. My kids loved it and were made to feel very welcome. We had been travelling for some time and in my kids' eyes the Adelaide was better than the Mandarin Oriental in Kuala Lumpur!! The hostel was also very central and the breakfast was great. Really liked the Irish owner. I would definitely return there.

The first two rooms I was shown here were a horror. There was mildew literally covering the wall, and the beds and other furniture were so old and broken down I was amazed they got away with renting them to anyone. The only part of the building that was even possibly up to code was the first floor and basement, but they had so many beds crammed into the "renovated" dorms downstairs that it was unbearable. The "Alcatraz" room stank, and you could smell it from the bathrooms down there. The Irish guys running it are rude and often drunk. Half the time, the "lobby," where you enter and use the computers (10-minute limit) stank of marijuana and tobacco smoke, as did the upstairs hallways. This is a grungy place, with lots of people living there. They have foreign "guests" cleaning the place, and they work them like slaves. There are strange things going on late at night with the staff and people coming and going quickly, dropping off God knows what.
