Jodanga Backpackers Hostel

Jodanga Backpackers Hostel is a beautiful hostel, large and nicely decorated -- the management do lay down a number of rules but these are reasonably designed to maintain the high standards of this accommodation and are not too restrictive.

The Location

It is possible to walk from the bus/train station, but you will need to obtain a map to find your way and it will take you around twenty minutes. Alternatively, it is easy to take a taxi (there are usually plenty waiting outside of the terminal) and are pretty cheap. There are shops and restaurants all within easy walking distance of the hostel.

Rooms and Bathrooms

You can choose between either six- or ten-bunk-bed dorms (some have en-suite and air conditioning, some just a fan) and the rooms are spacious and clean, as are the bathrooms, which have power showers and adequate space to change and store toiletries. The dorms are lockable by key and there are small lockers available outside of the dorms in which you can store valuables if desired. Air conditioning is switched on at 11 p.m. centrally, and all windows and doors are required to be closed in the rooms at this time. Private rooms are available.

Common Spaces

The hostel has a nice big pool, some tables, and seating in a couple of places (next to reception and also the bar area), there is also a pool table, a foosball table, and a TV room complete with beanbags and a large collection of DVDs available to borrow. There is a kitchen if you opt for self-catering. The hostel provides two computer terminals for guest use at no extra cost and free Wi-Fi for those with laptops. Plenty of information is available on local activities and Spanish lessons are offered for a reasonable rate. There is a book exchange, although you need to surrender two books in exchange for one or else one book and an additional fee in exchange for one, which seems a little unfair! If you don't need another book, you have the option to give your latest read to the hostel in exchange for beer!

Summary

Security here is good -- you need to ring a bell to gain access to the premises which is walled-off and hidden from street view. There is a pleasant atmosphere here and the hostel offers plenty of amenities. This is by no means the cheapest place in Santa Cruz but if you feel like treating yourself you will be sure to enjoy a relaxing stay in this is comfortable hostel.
