Avis de Hostelz.com
West End Studios is not quite what you may expect from looking at their website. The exterior and lobby are as shown, but watch out when you get past the lobby. That's when all the glamour ends.

The elevator was out of order, but when we came back three weeks later on the way back to Europe, it was back in service. In the rooms, the paint is obviously out of the leftovers bucket -- everything from lime green to dark gray.

The standard room is a double bed with a lumpy, soft mattress. The sheets are clean and not as worn out as the blankets. The pillows are a bit thin and a bit lumpy as well. Other rooms have bunk beds in them or on occasion, you might get a big room with two double beds and a bunk bed if it's available. The electricity in the rooms might be working, if you get the right room.

If it's working, the television is hooked up to the antenna on the roof via a cable that comes in through the window it doesn't get very good reception. In the first room we had, the cable to the TV was broken and half the electric plugs in the room did not work. We asked the front desk to have this fixed and went out for the day and came back to find nothing had been fixed.

The air conditioning unit is something out of the '80s and is very noisy. We got lucky and got another room, since they were not sold out during the time we were there. Rooms are cleaned daily and new towels and soap are on the beds every day. The hallways are narrow but kept clean. There is some wiring hanging out of boxes on some floors, but that is above your head.

There are two community bathrooms per floor per side of the building. They are not cleaned twice a day, as the housekeeping staff goes home in the afternoon. There is no mold, just old caulking. Use the showers at your own risk -- they have rapidly varying water temperature on some floors. Also you may get the privilege of seeing someone else's clump of hair on the floor of the shower. You also may find at least one bathroom out of service on your floor, as something may have gone wrong in there.

On our return trip, we found the first room to be way to small for four suitcases and hand baggage. So we asked for another and got a bigger room (the one described above). The second room had a bit of a problem with the lock on the door, but we managed to get it locked while we went out for the night. The light in room didn't work all that well either. The next morning when we were checking out the maintenance man came by and fixed the lock.

There are two pay phones on the ground floor near the lobby. There are storage lockers in the basement, but they are costly. There is a basement laundry and a lounge of sorts by the storage lockers. When it is working, the elevator is big enough to take four or five people with no luggage or two backpackers with packs. The desk does not accept credit cards, and only accepts cash for payment for the room. You have to have some sort of ID that says you are not from the area.

On the plus side, you are very close to the subway and numerous food and other shops on Broadway. A Bank of America ATM is located on Broadway as well, or you can use the one in the hostel on the ground floor. Be sure to check that your booking includes tax, as one of ours didn't, and it added a little bit of a surprise to our budget. You get what you pay for at this place, but it does need a lot of help to become more than a expensive, low-end flop house.

Quite calm, nice place to stay
My experience was not that awful! It's rather a good place, so quiet and there are no hoards of avid tourists. The room I was staying in was quite neat and clean. The stuff was nice and friendly. The location of this hostel is superb, the bus stop and subway are rather near. AC working all the time. I only regretted this hostel does not have kitchen. On the whole, this is rather a nice place.

Awful
The most awful dump. The bugs that bit me took months to heal and quite a few antibiotics. This is my vision of hell.

Bedbugs!
Our first real holiday together, the first time out of Europe for both of us -- New York! Big city, big expectations. But the West End Studios did not live up to that! The size of the room was ok for us, the bed looked ok, but the smell was strange like piss. We did not know what it was and we were happy on our holiday. After a few days I was covered in bites and now and then we saw small animals in the bed. After I lost counting my bites (stopped counting at seventy-four) we went to complain at the desk -- bedbugs they told us. I knew it from the movies -- watch the bedbugs, but I did not really know what this was. After some research I know now that they smell like cat piss. I looked funny too, with all these bites and the strange thing was my boyfriend had not one bite. We went to the local drugstore and they asked us if we were staying in a place for homeless. Nice. When we told the staff, they acted immediately. Well they tried to disinfect the room and gave us clean sheets, but that did not really work, and no the elevator did not work for most of the time (two out of eleven days). New York was great, but next time I will be sure to pick a different hotel.

Good place to go if you are just looking a place to sleep and bathe
Two friends of mine and I went to N.Y. for five days and we needed a cheap place where to stay at. After reading the all comments we were expecting the worst of all. When we got there, we found out it wasn't as bad as everyone said. It is a place where you can go to sleep and bathe. What else would you need a hotel for? you are in N.Y., enjoy! So, if you want a god place, well placed, and without spending much money to spend some days sightseeing in N.Y., it's a good option.

Me and my friend arrived here after a long flight all the way from Norway, and after having read all the bad comments on this place (after we had booked a room for a week), we were prepared to be met with a poor place. No matter how prepared we were for this, we were really disappointed. The reseption room and the front desk looked all right, but the rooms did not at all resemble those shown in the pictures we found on the internet. Of course, I can only speak for the room we slept in, but after having had a peek into some of the other rooms I am sure that all of the others were just as poor as ours. The painting was falling off the walls, the carpet dit not fit the room properly, and the sink was practically loose -- I could pull it out from the wall. Some times there was water coming, sometimes not. The door was difficult to close and there was a rather big gap between the door and the floor. The bathrooms were really worn down, and I had a lot of trouble getting a shower with hot water, mostly I had to shower in cold water. Unfortunately, I do not know the name of the man who "welcomed" us when we arrived, we were so soaking wet from the rain that day, and he was rude enough to let us stand there for ten minutes (the water was dripping from us and our luggage) while he apparently had a private conversation on the phone. Later on, the elevator wasn't working (and we lived on the sixth floor). There was no heating in the room so we were given a couple of extra blankets when we told the staff that it was freezing in there. No airconditioning either. I think we payed too much for this crappy place, but if it's impossible to find anything else, it's ok to stay there. But at the beginning it really felt like we were having a crash course in how to survive in NYC. After all, it's better than to sleep on the street, although I'm not happy about this place at all.

I read all the comments just before leaving and was scared to discover this place. But finding a hotel in Manhattan in August at a decent price is not an easy task, so my friend and I still went -- and we loved it. What do people expect? It was very clean, a bit old, the walls definitely need new paint, so what? It is greatly located, and yet quiet at night. We stayed three nights, and slept very well, people were respectful (clean bathroom, no noise at night). That is exactly what we were looking for, so, don't hesitate and go!

I arrived at the west end studios after a long flight to find that they had no record of my prebooked and prepaid reservation (or so they claimed) as it was late at night I was forced to pay ninety-five dollars for one night! I arrived in my room and, had I not been so exhausted, I would have gone straight back to reception to hand in my keys. The room was decorated in an oppressive dark blue paint and the carpet was like something out of an allotment which stunk of wet dogs and piss! The shower room was absolutely vile with sh*tty toilet paper piled high in a waste paper basket and a massive turd lodged in the bottom of the toilet. Again I was so desperate for a shower after my long journey that I had no choice but to use the damned thing. The next day I was out of that place like a bat out of hell and checked into a place slightly more fit for human habitation. I am still trying to get my money back from the bastards which they took from my credit card before claiming that they had no record of it. Also, to add insult to injury I was intensely itchy the following day and on my return to the UK I found dozens of bites all over my body which were confirmed by my doctor to be flea bites. I do not recommend that anyone (man, woman or beast) use this place for any purpose whatsoever. I had a very good laugh when I looked at their website on my return home! Think they got their pics mixed up during processing!!

This place is horrible. I could have slept in a dumpster for free and saved a lot of money. We checked in, walked to our room, looked at it, and went straight back to the front desk and told them we were leaving. The room was disgusting, filthy, smelly, unsafe, broken windows, and cockroaches. We left immediately and found another hostel three blocks down. A month after this we got our credit card statement and had been charged for our full three night reservation, without staying more than five minutes. After confronting the company over the phone we were told that the reason behind the charge is that we never showed up. How ridiculous. If you had bad experience like this, please contact the Better Business Bureau and help us to shut places like this down. Hostels like this make money by taking advantage of people through completely false advertising.

My family paid about $120 to stay here, and it was our worst hotel experience ever! I would rather sleep on the street. Actually, our friends had two nights booked there, and after the first night, they packed their bags, and the second night they slept at the airport!!! It was so hot in the room. On their Web site it says they have air-conditioned rooms. It's a lie! We went to the manager and asked him why he wrote that. He said, "Because some of the rooms have air-conditioning." Yeah, as in, some rooms maybe have working fans. The TVs don't work, and the carpet is dirty. Our carpet had a wad of gum, dust in all corners, something that looked like a dead maggot, and was peeling. The floor creaked everywhere you stepped. I thought I would fall through. The elevator didn't work. I would never step foot in one of their showers. I didn't dare look under the blanket at the sheets, I just "slept" in my clothes. My family reserved a room for four people. When we got there we were given two separate rooms, on two separate floors. My parents were afraid to leave my sister and I alone in a room, so all four of us shared a bunk bed. My mom and dad slept on the single bottom bunk, while my sister and I slept on the top. By the way, the top bunk has no rails, so if I were to actually fall asleep, there would be a good chance I would roll off. We had a closet, with a toilet in it. Everyone there was like us, looking around and wondering what they were doing in that dump, and paying to be there, too. The only thing that worked was the alarm clock, but we didn't need it, because we spent the whole night awake, staring at the passing minutes. At 4 a.m. we were out of the hotel to catch our flight. I'm surprised I didn't see any cockroaches. These people run a fraudulent business. I'm surprised someone hasn't stopped them yet. I have a feeling their business is about to be closed down.... hopefully.

We had a reservation for five nights in July 2004. We got there and left the next morning. This place is dangerous, filthy, unprofessional, and a total scam. Beware -- we booked this place because it was recommended by hotels.com. There were cockroaches in the room, and holes in the mattress. I have traveled in Mexico and Egypt, and have never seen a place like this. This is outright fraud, and their website is a total misrepresentation. There should be a no-star rating for this place.

These guys should be arrested for fraud. The info and images on their website is just one big fat lie, in reality the hotel is a terrible place to stay, a total waste of your money.

Pure fraud. They will charge you for being scared of the place and wanting to leave. There is no security (no phones in the rooms, no working tv, strange hard to lock doors, dark hallways and no vigilance at the desk). It's dirty, stinky, the communal bathrooms and showers are terrible and sometimes don't work. It's a scary place which makes money off overbooking and scaring people away (they get you're money when you cancel).

We stayed for a few days at the West End Studios. I must say that I cannot recommend this place. It must be possible to stay at a better hostel/hotel for 97 dollars. West End is not clean: not the rooms, not the bathrooms. The quality of the beds is really bad, the desk clerks unprofessional, and the management can't be trusted with your money or credit card number. The information on their website is totally not true and the picture painted a false one.
