Avis de Hostelz.com
Fort Lauderdale Hostel is a small, motel-type hostel on Ocean Boulevard, remarkably situated among huge developments of high-rise and high-price condominiums. The survival of this old but good, flat topped, unobtrusive-looking, two-story house gives people a small chance to have a piece of the East Coast la-la-land action at a low price. It is a short walk from the beach, where you can surf -- albeit the waves were not great when we went. It is within a half-hour bus ride of famous las Olas Boulevard, the Riverwalk, and other Fort Lauderdale attractions.

Busy at Spring Break, the hostel packs them in pretty tight, but the no-nonsense staff is both capable and efficient at managing the lively company. The party atmosphere is found even earlier in the season as guests enjoy their beer and wine on the terraces or down in the atrium. There are two large balconies and a garden down below between the balconies, which amounts to lots of outdoor space for carrying on.

The six-bunk dorms are not big -- they were converted from motel rooms -- and bathrooms are en-suite. There are three kitchens -- one is bigger, and the breakfast is available there. The laundry is ordinary and there is free use of an in-house computer. A couple of television lounges indoors are in frequent use. The front gate is always locked, but it could be climbed over. Some people go in and out of the rooms without locking them, even though they have keys, so one might assume they feel secure.

Grocery shopping at the beach is a problem because there are few stores. Twenty minutes' walk in either direction will get you to some form of food shopping -- no proper market though. A half-hour bus trip away, for interesting takeout food there is a place across from the Broward Station, or for cheap energy, the McDonald's is next door. If this were a lunch trip, the main downtown attractions are all conveniently a half-hour walking distance from the station. Also, eateries along the Riverwalk offer views of vessels in the water, along with the flavor of marine exhaust. On las Olas Boulevard there are also al fresco dining possibilities.

To get to Fort Lauderdale Hostel take the Number 11 bus at Broward Central Station, ride for about half an hour, and get off near the big, pink buildings where the road veers a little away from the beach. The Broward Central Station is a useful starting point, but to get there from the Greyhound Station, ask directions and walk the five blocks, or take a taxi. There is a bus, but usually it is faster to walk. On boarding the Number 11 make sure it is going the right way, toward Ocean Boulevard -- ask at the information kiosk. To get to the Central Station from the Tri-Rail take the Number 55 or the free shuttle. From the airport, again the Tri-Rail is best, then the same buses. Car parking is available at the hostel.

Great place to stay except for the bugs
Best thing about the hostel was tons of open space. Two huge outdoor patios, one big kitchen, two little kitchens, a courtyard, and two TV rooms. My dorm room was clean. Only drawback was the bedbugs. I got bit all over. You might wanna take your chances with the upper bunk instead.

This Hostel was not the worst place I have ever stayed in, the worst part about it was the smell of other people's shoes in the room. If you can get by that you have a pretty good place to stay. It was nice to use th BBQ and you could bring your own beer in and drink anywhere. The security seemed fine and there was no lockout. except the weird hours. 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. they stayed open, 4 to 6 p.m. they were closed. For Fort Lauderdale, I was happy with it. Lots of good people and good conversation. if you like to meet people this is the place to stay.

This place is filthy! The shower in the girls room had tons of mold. Even worse though is that they oversold beds. The two male members of our group checked in and staked out beds around 10 p.m. When they returned around 1, their beds were taken up by others. Despite calls to the late night help number, no one came to let them into another room or help solve the problem. They "slept" on uncomfortable lawn chairs. This was the first experience at hostels for one of our group, and it was not a pleasant one!

unfortunately, the beach bums who have set up residence here take over and make you feel like you are unwelcomed. some good apples, many bad apples. need adults to run the place, not loafers.

Great hostel and great people. Fort Lauderdale is one of the nicest places I've ever been! I would go there again, for sure. The hostel is right at the beach -- the only bad thing, you have to take a bus to get to downtown Fort Lauderdale and the buses aren't coming on time, but who cares. I had the best time!

It's been a year since we were there, we feel emotional. We miss Chef, Ted, Ben, Paul, Detroit (Jeff), Lynn, and Lynn's boyfriend, Lurch (Craig). We'll be back, don't you worry.

The security and services are terrible. Rooms are connected by a door inside and anyone can come in anytime. Even a single-sex room is not safe. On the first night, some stranger (man) came into our room after 3 a.m. and slept next to my friend (girl). He offended her and we got so scared. When we told staff and a manager at the hostel about this incident, they didn't take it seriously and didn't even try to solve the problem. The staff can be nice, but at the same time, they tend to avoid facing problems. It is really hard to keep all your personal belongings safe. The mixed dorm is extremely dirty. There was a girl who even moved out. There isn't as much free stuff as it says on the Web site. The worst thing is that staff are not very cautious about dealing with money. BE CAREFUL! They charged us double the price we were supposed to pay. They wouldn't even realize it if we had not called directly to our credit companies and told the manager about it. When they have to face the problems, they just got emotional, mad, and yelled at us. The attitude was totally rude and we didn't feel comfortable staying there at all. Due to miscommunication between staff people, even simple things cannot be done immediately, or just get complicated, and it is just tiring to stay there.

I was there in Feb and I loved it. It was my first time in a hostel so I didn't have anything to compare it to, but I did love the courtyard a lot. I think its location right across from the beach was the best part, but the people were a close second. I guess I can imagine there are probably better places but I still loved it. Peace.

I stayed here in 2001 and loved it. It was the best hostel I had ever stayed at. I loved all the freebies, combined with the friendly staff and residents, good facilities and a comfy (bug-free) bed. I would like to go back here - I hope it hasn't gone downhill.

This place has too many residents; it's not really a hostel.

This hostel has good and bad features. The good features are that it provides lots of freebies such as food, coffee, tea, Internet etc. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The location can't be beat if you want to be close to the beach. I had no problem with parking. The downside: The private room was very clean when we first arrived but after a couple days there were very tiny bugs crawling all over the walls. They were very small, and I'm not sure what they were. It could have been because we did leave some food out but still I wouldn't expect this. The beds were comfy (two singles) and you can get wireless Internet in the room. The major problem with this hostel (other than the bugs) is the party atmosphere. There seem to be people who live here for long stretches and sit out in the courtyard every night drinking and being very loud. The first night they quieted down by 1 a.m. The second night at 11:30 I had to ask them to tone it down and they did. But it seems to be non-stop in the evenings. It's just too loud. I have been to many hostels and this is the first time I have seen this much open partying. When I slightly mentioned this to one staff member he just said that a hostel isn't for everyone. I like this staff member despite this rather annoying answer. Do the negatives outweigh the positives? Well, the bugs are a deal breaker regardless of how much is given away. The exterminator is not doing a good job. Other than that, I can live with the noise but it is intimidating to walk by a group of drunken people. This hostel has a lot of potential but it is being wasted.

We've stayed at this hostel twice. We just can't help going back to see our pals. This place could do with some water in the empty ponds. The location is great, right opposite the beach, and it was a nice leisurely stroll to the 7-11 market and Shooters bar. For extra-curricular fun, mango fights are a treat. But beware, cleaning dried mango off the balcony in 100-degree heat is not fun.

I had a great time here. The staff were friendly. They provide food (spaghetti, Ramen noodles) It's across the street from the beach. The only problem is that it's a good 20-minute walk to a populated beach area and bars. Try getting a car from Sunshine rentals. They were pretty cheap, at 25 dollars a day for my compact. Although I did have a problem with one of their Daewoos (but they promptly exchanged it).
