Galway City Hostel is by far the best located hostel we've come across. It's directly across the road from the bus and train station -- it doesn't get any better than that.
This is great hostel. Security is top notch -- you have to be buzzed in, they will request hostel ID as you pass the reception desk, and they provide big lockable baskets that roll under the beds for your backpacks. This is one of the only hostels we've come across in Europe that has individual security for your belongings.
Amenities include a self-catering kitchen with oven, microwave, and stove top that people actually keep clean; internet access (also wi-fi) for cheaper than down the road; and a decently sized common room/eating area with a TV. The staff are great, each one willing to find out information about local tours if requested and ready to provide discount passes to various bars, clubs, and restaurants.
The only negative point is that the showers flood a little. They have a push button system and it's not wise to push the button again as soon as it stops. Give the water a chance to drain (thirty seconds) and then go again. Your belongings will appreciate it.
Last but not least, the rooms. The dorms were fairly large, comfortably furnished (not crowded), and the bunk beds didn't wobble (much), squeak, or sag! This is wonderful. They have private rooms available too. We would definitely stay here again.
