Avis de Hostelz.com
The Sentrum Pensjonat youth hostel is ideally located in the heart of Oslo and is a good value stop for any backpacker looking for a real bed with decent linen and a friendly atmosphere.

The Location

The hostel is centrally located and is only five minutes' walk from the central railway station. Once you've found your bearings and checked the map, it's easy to find. It's right in the heart of the city and although there are rumors of seedy nightlife plying its trade on the streets outside, we didn't see any of this on the several occasions we stayed -- the streets of Oslo seem relatively safe and friendly even at night. Despite being on a main city road the area is fairly quiet at night, so the road noise won't keep you awake.

If you are arriving by air, there is a high-speed train between the central station and the airport, which will cost you an arm and a leg but only takes about twenty minutes. If you're prepared to slum it with the locals, the commuter train takes about forty minutes for half the price.

Rooms and Bathrooms

This hostel provided actual beds (not bunks) in its rooms and they come with linen, pillows, and towels. All rooms also have their own small refrigerator and some have a small kitchenette with hotplates and water. Most rooms have four to six beds, but there are one or two semi-private, two-bed rooms. Each room has its own key but there are no individual lockers. There is a spacious luggage room beside reception if required.

The number of toilets and showers are a little low for the number of beds, but if it's not busy this isn't a problem. Showers are private, unisex cubicles and are clean and adequate with a place for clothes and room to change.

Common Spaces

On the first floor, there is a large common room, two lounge suites, a large wooden table and chairs, pay internet, and two DVD-only televisions.

Along one wall of the common room is the kitchen. The kitchen is adequate for small numbers of people using it at the same time, but it would be advisable to plan your meals for off-peak times of the day to avoid waiting. There is no refrigerator in the kitchen -- use the one in your room.

The common room could be quite a good place to meet fellow travelers and discuss plans. This is a subdued but quite social hostel. There is a restaurant on the ground-floor where you can eat fairly cheaply that seems to have a relationship with the hostel, although is not strictly part of it. Otherwise there is a reasonably good supermarket in the railway station nearby.

Security

You will be given a code for the front door and a key to your room. There is a luggage room if you require that. Most of the hallways and common areas are monitored by security camera, which, although a little creepy, does mean that in theory you are safer here than elsewhere.

Summary

This is a good hostel with only a few quirks but is clean, friendly, spacious, and comfortable. Overall it is very good value for money and well worth considering.

3 Decent hostel, bad neighbourhood.
It's an alright hostel. i wouldnt want to have a private room there as the room of eight is connected through one of the private rooms on every floor. there are not many people staying there but your room is always full. the neighbourhood sucks. there are hookers everywhere and its right on top of a strip club. But considering oslo is five times the price of north america this isnt so bad. free internet. new, clean showers. no bunk beds.

5 One of the best hostels I have ever stayed at!
What a lovely place to stay! The neighborhood is perfect (not sketchy at all), two minutes from the main train station and metro, and right on a hugely popular shopping street. The highlight though was the hostel itself. I have never in my life stayed in such a comfortable bed! And in a hostel! They provide you with a down comforter and lovely, soft towel. Showers and bathrooms are clear. Kitchen is large and used frequently so everything is in working condition. People are so friendly too! Don't pay for the breakfast though -- it's inedible. But not associated with the hostel so I still can complain. Loved my stay and it would not have been the same had I not been here.

3 We stayed at Sentrum Pensjonat in January for two nights. At the end it wasn't so bad, although there were a few things we didn't like. First of all, when we booked a double room on a website (not the website of the hostel) we were told that there should be a bathroom as well in our room. Actually, there aren't rooms in the pensjonat with bathroom. And I think that we paid more because of the bathroom, that there wasn't. But it's not the fault of the pensjonat. The second thing is that the double bed was as a normal single bed. So for a couple it's better to book a twin bed room, because I felt like in a Kabul campus, although I was there with my boyfriend, and it's nice to sleep next to him. So the bed was so little. And unfortunately there was smoke in the hostel, as it's allowed to smoke. The room was little but quite clean. With TV, that didn't work, but I didn't go to Oslo to watch TV so it wasn't a problem. Than, there are two bathrooms for two floors but they were clean and I hadn't wait a lot, so no problem. The room was warm, so that was a good point as outside there were -6 C. The breakfast is really good. There were several foods to try. Reke as well, witch is typical of Norway. The staff was nice. For a weekend in Oslo it was quite good. For two weeks I think it's a little bit uncomfortable because of the small beds and because of the bathrooms, if the pensjonat is full. Ah, an other point for the pensjonat is the central position! It's two minutes' walk from the station and from the ryanair bus station. And you can get to all the monuments by foot. It's really close to everything. Enjoy your staying in Oslo! It was a nice weekend with my Fabiuzzo!

5 We have experienced none of the stuff mentioned in the previous comment. The place is neat, clean, and friendly and more so than almost any hostel we've been to in Europe. Sure, it is full of little defects as any "youth" place should be, but there are no nasty surprises, like bedbugs, foul-smelling sheets, or non-working toilets. Our room was quite spacious, showers and WCs were clean, and I saw people scrubbing them few times during two-day stay. They also serve nice breakfast and have fast wi-fi internet. We saw guests of various ages and no one seemed to be discontent. I'm giving it five stars to balance the bad comment, just don't let it set your expectations too high, it is a hostel after all. Still I would safely recommend this place to anyone and would stay there myself if need be.

1 Ok so this place wasn't a hostel, but wasn't a hotel. You can book a dorm for six people but you need to have six people. Makes sense doesn't it. Not really. The rooms were comfortable and the showers fairly new and plentyful. Other than that the hotel/hostel put out bad vibes from the start. This is a huge place with over four hundred rooms yet there wouldn't have been more than thirty people in the place. If you dont mind having hundreds of hookers hassling you and asking you for sex literally as soon as you leave the front door then this place is for you. If you also dont mind seeing old men bring hookers back to the place and having them roam the hallways then it is ok. Unfortunately, it wasn't ok for me and made my stay very uncomfortable. If you do stay here be very careful at night. I mean very careful. I nearly got beaten up by a pimp for turning down a hooker.
