Hiker Youth Hostel -Shanghai has a relatively large atmosphere. There are en-suite, co-ed, and single rooms. There are three computers with internet connection in the lobby, but considering the number of guests, it’s hard to get computer time and there is always a line of people waiting. The hostel has wireless internet connection if you bring your own laptop.
There are bathrooms and showers on each floor. The showers are small and although they advertise twenty-four-hour hot water in their brochure, hot water is only available from 7 to 12 a.m. and 7 to 12 p.m. -- not very convenient for guests who arrive in the afternoon and need a shower to refresh.
The en-suite rooms have poor lighting and ventilation. If you need sufficient lighting and air in the room, ask for a room with a window. In that case you’ll have to use the common bathroom and you’ll need to deal with the traffic noise early in the morning. The beds are relatively clean and there is room service every afternoon. Each room is equipped with a heater/air-conditioner.
The food at the restaurant is good -- the prices are comparable to those of other restaurants in town. There is a small pool table in the lounge with TV/DVD and books and movies to borrow. Smoking is allowed in the restaurant/lounge.
The reception does not offer any tours around Shanghai, and does not provide help to book bus/train tickets, but the train ticket sale outlet is only one block away from the hostel. The hostel staff does help to purchase plane tickets, although not with a large discount as advertised in their brochure.
