Avis de Hostelz.com
There are not many hostels in Maui, and the Banana Bungalow seems to be the top choice for most backpackers. You'll find it busy at most times of the year and brimming with international visitors.

Because of the lack of choice, quality accommodation options in Maui are hard to come by. While the Banana Bungalow is not a high class backpacker hostel, it does provide the basics that you'll need for a good stay.
There are great communal areas complete with TV, foosball table, pool table, and an outdoor tropical setting with fruits. The kitchen area has all the facilities you'll need and is stocked with shared cutlery. However, the advertised jacuzzi is no longer in existence [Update: We're told it's back in service], but who needs it when you've got Maui's world class beaches nearby! Internet is also free via wi-fi or the computer that's available. Common areas are shut in at 10 p.m. on weeknights and you'll have to return to your room by 11 p.m.

The thing that really makes the Banana Bungalow a decent place to stay is the tours. No other hostels in Maui run the extensive (and free for a tip) tours that are offered here -- you could be swimming with turtles or driving to the beautiful town of Hanna during your stay here. The going rate for tips is well worth it. The guides are not paid by the hostel and rely on tips.

Rooms here are pretty average by hostel standards, but adequate for a good night's sleep. You won't get much better in Maui and the rooms are clean and fresh -- the most important thing. The hostel offers free transfers from the airport and a free local bus is available at certain times of day. You can catch it to connect with other buses across the island or jump off at the Mall to do shopping or whatever you have planned.

Awesome -- love Banana bungalow
This place is not the cleanest one but the Staff and people staying at the hostel are amazing and will have great memories for life! plus the free tours are great. yes you are expected to pay tips but if you take the time to see how much a guided tour to Haleakala or Road to Hana costs, $100 to $150, a $20 tip is nothing. besides all the guides are volunteers -- they are not paid. i save so much money from doing the free tours and saw most of maui, the tours are really well made. Yes the location sucks, but people just hang out and chill in the garden at night if you want to do something besides the tours just take the bus or there is probably someone with a rented car and a group will be able to go somewhere. Great place to travel if you are alone, they have a common room with foosball, pool, and giant TV. I'm going bananas for Banana Bungalow, love it!

Great First Hostel Experience
This was the first Hostel I have ever stayed at. The whole staff was very friendly and helpful. Great Tours to Iao Needle, Hana, Lahaina, Snorkeling. The Tour guides work for tips and to show the guest great times. I personally had no problem taking care of my guied each day as it would have cost a lot more to take a tour through a tour service. I stayed in a dorm room and never had any problems with bugs. Great get togethers every night. There is a small mini-mart next door and a grocery store about a hundred yards down the street. Bus stops with in fifty feet and only cost a dollar to go to Lahiana or Paia.

It's excellent
The accommodation is great, the people very friendly, even the guests, cause the atmosphere is so good that you feel comfortable and free as in your house. The tours are awesome as the guides! I'm very happy to have spent my days in hawaii there.

This is a great hostel, good times. I traveled by myself to maui and found so many to hang out with. Tours are awesome and really keep you busy. i suggest renting a car as the hostel is not walking distance to anything really, plus it gives you the options to explore more on your own! would come back.

Best hostel so far!
The tours are amazing, it is a great place to make friends when you're traveling on your own! Just get on one of the tours, the beach shuttle, or in the hot tub. I've made friends for life! Private bathrooms, four-Bed Dorms, no bedbugs plus the most comfy bed ever in a hostel, fun and helpful staff! Thanks to Isaac and Hans, who did an amazing job being a tour guide and showing us the real Hawaii! If you want to see Hawaii not only from its touristy side this is the way to go!

Amazing
The Banana Bungalow has been a great experience for me. By far, my favorite hostel in the world. Clean rooms, amazing staff who are friendly, helpful and full of knowledge, free daily tours that will give you life-long memories. I went not really knowing what I was gonna take back with me, but I've made some awesome friends and memories and I was very sad to have to leave.

Great place to hang out and make friends!
I stayed at the banana bungalow in December of 2007. I was a bit skeptical at first as we made our way into a room full of smelly guys that were passed out on the bunk beds at only 8:30. However, given a little time spent at the hostel and the great tours they offer I grew to love the place. We planned to stay there only for a few nights but each morning woke up hoping to extend it for another. We ended up spending our whole time in Maui at this hostel. The tour guides were awesome and the price reasonable -- like any other hostel you will find in Hawaii. Compared to the two we stayed at in Oahu this hostel definitely kicked ass! Sucks that the kitchen and common room closed early however I understand that they need to be cleaned and can't be open all night. Overall, highly recommended!

Worst Hostel I've ever experienced in my life. Don't stay here!
Where to begin. well there's the flea infestation for starters, but this hostel is 100% unsafe! I called ahead to ask the staff if there was secure storage for my scuba gear. They assured me there was. I left my scuba equipment in this "secure storage" and it was pillaged the first night. Luckily the thieves only took a few dive lights, and left the rest. When I complained to the staff, they told me it was Maui man -- pathetic. Then my expensive dive watch was stolen from my locked room when I popped out for a few minutes to check my e-mail. The staff are a bunch of spaced out kids who take no responsibility for anything. The place is filthy, infested with fleas, and noisy. I don't even give it one star, but that's the lowest rating this site will allow. Despite saying you are required to show ID and a return ticket, they never checked my ID or ticket, so no wonder it is full of thieves. Oh yeah the "free tours" aren't free as you are expected to give fat tips to the drivers.

Great
considering there's around fifty people staying here at any given time, i was impressed by how clean the staff kept it. white powder? yes i saw it. don't know what it is, but it didn't bother me. no bedbugs or anything creepy. the tours are free, but they do encourage you to tip your tour guide, as they are travelers too and work hard for probably little or no pay to keep this hostel clean for us. when i asked a bus full of locals about the bungalow, nobody looked at me cross. in fact, a lady with her kid even walked me to the front door to make sure i got there late that first night. the locals do expect you to be respectful of their land, but if you are not rude or arrogant with them are very nice and very laid back. wailuku may look a bit sketchy in patches, what with the chickens running free in zero lot line yards, but i never once felt unsafe, even at night. i'm from dallas, so i dare say i know what unsafe feels like! lot of fun, diverse people stay here! you can stay up late and party, but if you want to sleep, most people are respectful and quiet after hours. this was my first hostel experience, and it's one of the best things i've ever done! i hope i can come stay here again soon!

It sucks ass
This hotel sucks ass. It had poor service. It was roach infested. When I got there looking for a warm welcome from the clerk, she gave me attitude and I had to cuss her out. The bathrooms were out of order. Someone snipped my lock, stole all my valuables, and they had the nerve to charge me for a phone call. And they don't take credit or debit.

This was one of the best places i stayed. went round the world for a year, and stayed in about sixty places, this was one of my top five. great atmosphere, great people. great tours. really good location. bikes for rent. met some wonderful people. it's a party hostel, but you still get your sleep, relaxed. loved it, thanks for a most memorable time and the wonderful mangoes.

As a girl going traveling on my own for my first time I was a little nervous about what I had got myself in for after reading some reviews. I arrived at the bungalow on a friday night where everyone was hanging out and enjoying the free keg (every friday!) of stella and tacos, I felt shy and tired to try and get pally with already established friends but after going on the Saturday tour I had met some great people and loved chatting to everyone over a bottle of vino or two every night. There really isn't a lot to do in the evenings but I had a great time just chilling out with everyone at the bungalow and apart from walking up to the gas station to get alcohol, really wasn't bothered about going anywhere else. I loved the tours and did everyone of them (except thursdays -- needed a whole day on the beach). Alexi and Brian were great, as were the rest of the staff there. I had cool roommates all week and would recommend this place to everyone. Can't wait to get back there in the summer.

I stayed here for just under two weeks during march and the hostel really isn't that bad. I agree that the area of the hostel is awful -- stay clear of the locals and there is nothing to do once it gets dark. But the tours were good and the place was cleaned well.

I just came home from a wonderful time in Maui. We stayed at the bungalow for five days and what made this place exceptional was the people. The establishment was good as well. Being we were three girls traveling to Maui, when we read about this hostel, we were a little unsure. Bed bugs and dodgy neighbourhoods are never a good thing. But eventhough the neighbourhood wasn't high class, I still felt safe enough to walk around (during the day, at night I stayed within the hostel grounds). The room we stayed in was comfortable and simple. The kitchen was clean and it made cooking in the hostel fun. The grounds were awesome, I loved being surrounded by all these tropical plants, birds, and lizards/geckos. The hot tub was working, though I never went in it because there was so many other things to do. The tours that we did were well worth it! The tour guides were quite knowledgeable and answered all questions. I'd definitely recomend this place to anyone. Enjoy Maui!

Great Place to be, Just don't go out at night drunk. Friendly staff, and good tours. We were excited about our trip to Maui, and we were a little freaked out about what we read about this place, but we got there and we loved it. We recommend it to all our friends. Just as long as you're not high maintenance you should be fine. The neighborhood was a bit sketch, but you don't really go to hawaii to hang out around your room. I felt like my stuff was safe enough in my room and I had a great time exploring the island!
