Avis de Hostelz.com
Named in loving memory of two pet fish, Bon Paul and Sharky's Hostel is located in a converted two-story home on hip Haywood Road in West Asheville, NC. Sunflowers grow tall outside the house, and just two blocks away local farmers bring their produce to the organic food market and once weekly outdoor market. Coffeeshops, pubs, and thrift shops abound, and the hostel has bikes available to borrow for free, if you should want free transportation to the downtown. Local buses also run past the house during the day.

The house is a comfortable one that feels like home, with a swing on the front porch and a hot tub on the back. The ground floor is all common areas with an open layout (no doors). The living room includes a small desk which serves as the reception area, a pet fish, and couches and a large TV where backpackers as well as the owner's friends are often watching DVDs. The dining room has a breakfast table, foosball, and US and world maps where travelers mark their hometowns. There is plenty of cabinet and fridge space in the kitchen, as well as free waffles, snow cones, and common food. The upstairs contains three dorm rooms and one double room. Sheets are provided with no extra charge. There is no air conditioning, but fans keep the rooms comfortable through most of the summer.

The house fosters a friendly sense of community, so hostelers hang out here perhaps more than at other hostels (the free wi-fi helps, too!). The only downside is that, being a regular house, there are only two full bathrooms for everyone to share. On weekdays and uneventful weekends, this is not a big problem, as people tend to get up at different times anyway. Those who have their own equipment and choose to camp in the backyard enjoy the benefits of the hostel at a lower price, but between a bumpy ground, a light that shines all night, and the hum of some machine near the house, it may be worth paying full price to stay inside.

Finding the hostel by car is easy, as Haywood is a major road in West Asheville. Just watch carefully, as the numbers go by fast! For bus information, free rides, or more info, just call the helpful hostel staff.

Best Hostel on the East Coast!
I have stayed in many hostels, in the U.S. and abroad, and Bon Paul & Sharky's is one of the best. It has a great location, just outside of downtown Asheville, in a funky neighborhood. The young staff were fun, approachable, and super helpful and had great suggestions for things to do. It is convenient to bars and restaurants just down the street, hiking and swimming along the Blue Ridge Parkway, shopping downtown, and Asheville's live music scene, which is great. If you need just a chill night in the house, there is always music playing, interesting people hanging out, a great porch, and a hot tub! They also serve community dinners and a huge Sunday brunch. The kitchen, bathrooms, and community rooms are kept spotless and the dorms are comfortable and clean. What a great hostel in a great town! I'll definitely be back soon!

Not recommended!
This is one of the worst hostels I've ever stayed in. It felt more like a frat house than a hostel. The staff stayed up very late being very loud, then weren't around in the morning when I wanted to check out. I could've easily left without paying, but didn't. The shower was gross -- the drain was completely clogged. The kitchen was also grungy. The hostel is quite far from downtown Asheville. After one night, I moved to a hotel downtown and later saw two other people there who had been staying at this hostel.

This place is definitely designed for the hiker. If you're looking for some place economical to stay this is the place for you. But, don't look for luxury accommodations. The place wasn't the cleanest by any means, the kitchen is funky, not in a good way. The bathroom -- well someone had an aversion to flushing the toilet and the shower was sketchy. The staff when they were around seemed nice enough. But in all honesty traveling alone as a female, I felt safer there then I felt staying at a hotel on my own. Oh one other thing there was no parking available there as the website may tell you, I had to park on the street, where it's one-hour parking only Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (and it's not within walking distance to downtown Asheville proper). It is within walking distance to West Asheville downtown though.

A wonderful time! Beds were comfortable, bathrooms immaculate, the hot tub was great, and the people were wonderful! Can't wait to go back.

i have to say, this is a great hostel! cool, laid back, clean, friendly (even dog friendly w/ a kennel out back). the staff is great, the area has lots to do and the hostel itself is clean and well equipped with hi speed wifi, big screen tv, and even a hot tub on the back deck. steps away from a cool pub and close driving distance to absolutely beautiful hiking. i had a great time there and highly reccommend it.

What can I say... I had the best time at Bon Paul and Sharky's! It's a great hostel, and it's clear that Joe has taken all the best bits from the hostels he's stayed in in his travels and put them in West Asheville. Great bar called the Westville 2 mins walk from the hostel with good live music, good laundry up the road (with a great pool hall next to it, so you can "shoot sum" while washing your dirty undies!) All the staff made us "funny talkers" welcome, and one (Jeremy) even went out of his way to give me lifts to my next destination in return for gas money and a few beers!

Short but intense, we spent only one night there and it was simply fantastic. Since the very first moment we felt very comfortable, not only at home but also going out at night. Paul and his friends, Katherine, Rebecca and others gave us a very nice treat. I could even chat a little bit in my homeland language, in Spanish! I strongly recommend this hostel as well as the city of Asheville to spend a nice laid-back, wonderful time.

I've stayed at hostels in six countries and five U.S. states, and Bon Paul & Sharky's Hostel surpasses them all. The place is very clean and safe, but somehow, miraculously, extremely mellow. The back porch has a hot tub and a view of the mountains that is nothing short of sublime, and the front porch has a swing. The staff are exceptionally helpful, there are bikes to borrow, and the walls are decorated with fantastic tiny picture frames. I'd stay there even if it weren't in super-fun Asheville, which it is. In short, you'd be crazy NOT to stay there.

A hostel in it's truest and best sense. The hip young staff has ample knowledge of the area, and even organized a couple of community nights while I was there (pumpkin carving, and homemade pizza) then out on the town. There is a large common room with a huge TV, great for sports and movies, and a fire pit in the backyard where we sat around at night telling stories and roasting marshmallows. A great hostel experience and a must-stay place for any traveler in the region.

Very clean at the time I visited, nice vibes, beautiful house, huge/clean hot tub, and the bicycles are a plus! Lots of cool shops to walk/ride bikes to, safe location, and the do-it-yourself breakfast in the morning gives you a chance to meet and hang out with fellow hostelers. Joe is a great guy, very kind and helpful. Eric, (the other guy) is pretty cool and helpful as well!! I would recommend this hostel to anyone who travels, and especially if you like AWESOME organic pizza!!! (Digable pizza within a stone's throw!!!)

I have stayed at hostels all over the world, and this one was by far the best! Joe (the owner) is a wonderful host, and a great guy. The hostel has a cozy, comfortable, friendly environment. There is much to do here if you like to party, and if you don't, you can just curl up on the couch and watch a movie. If you plan on staying at a hostel in Asheville and having a good time, definitely stay at Bon Paul & Sharky's.

Bon Paul & Sharky's hostel provided me with a much better experience than staying at the 4 Seasons and for a fraction of the price. The hostel was clean, safe, and in a great location close to pubs, coffee shops, hiking trails, and shops. For 20 bucks you get a bed, a shower, a huge TV to watch, coffee and if you're lucky some of the best lasagna in the world. The guests and the staff were very considerate and friendly. The owner, "Joe," is the MAN.

I came to Asheville by myself because I was sick of my friend's BS when it came to making trip plans and I needed a break from my normal life. When I found out how expensive the hotels in Asheville were I thought I wasn't going to be able to go. Then as fate would have it I misspelled hotel on a Web search and found Bon Paul & Sharky's hostel. I didn't really know much about hostels but I'm always up for an adventure so I decided to give it a try. To my surprise the house was clean, the people staying there were nice, Joe (the owner) was a cool laid-back guy even though he was gimp (he broke his leg) and I felt safe. I didn't feel like anyone was going to rob me even though my drunken a** probably wouldn't have noticed. I am a high maintenance type of girl in that I have to shower regularly, brush my teeth, and I like my Serta Perfect Sleeper, so I was very happy to learn that there were showers and sinks readily available, as well as shockingly comfortable bunk beds. Since I went by myself and I am a shy person I was expecting to have fun during the day on hikes and while visiting the Biltmore but be lonely at night because I wouldn't have any friends to go out with. But the beauty of staying in the hostel was that I met new people to go out with and stay "home" with. I enjoyed meeting people from all over the country. So come stay at Bon Paul & Sharky's Hostel where for $20/night you get a shower, shelter, a place to lay your head, coffee, and if you're lucky some of Joe's world-famous lasagna. You can't beat it. And for those of you who don't want to meet people don't be discouraged because if you want to be left alone then people will leave you alone and there is plenty of space and tons of things to do in Asheville and the surrounding area. Beautiful waterfalls, pubs, music festivals, coffee shops, hiking trails, mountains, and the famous overrated and overpriced Biltmore Estate.
