Sapporo House Hostel is in an extremely convenient location, a mere five minute walk from Sapporo Station and two blocks from the botanical garden. Exit the station's north gate and turn left, or simply exit West through the shopping center, and it's straight ahead.
The reception is very polite and helpful. Check-in hours are limited but there is no curfew and the front door is always unlocked. Since rooms are also not monitored and no bed assignments given, this means that safety might be an issue although Sapporo is quite a safe town. Additionally, there is almost no ventilation in the rooms, making it necessary to keep the window and door open during the warmer months or else it can become unbearably hot. It will almost certainly be smelly. The bedsheets are, however, quite clean and the beds somewhat comfortable. They have both bunk-bed rooms and bedless tatami rooms which they seem to give only to Japanese guests.
The bathing facilities are clean and acceptable, with the standard Japanese sitting hand-shower and a large bathtub. Soap and shampoo are also provided. The management says bathing hours are from five to ten at night and six to eight in the morning, but in practice the facilities were nearly always available for use. Laundry machines and dryers are available downstairs and are inexpensive.
The meals are only ok, but certainly not worth it since this town is known for its food. Try Jingis Kan barbecue, all over Sapporo, particularly the Susukino entertainment district. All you can eat sliced lamb and all you can drink beer for one hundred minutes. Sushi and crab in this town are also fantastic.
