HI - Boston Hostel at Fenway passes itself off as a hostel from June to August, and for the rest of the year it is transformed back into basic university halls. Fenway is nothing to write home about -- it's not that there's anything particularly offensive about it, but there's nothing exceptionally remarkable about it either.
Location
The great thing about this hostel is that it's not too far from the centre, (around a twenty-minute walk) and it's only minutes away from a metro stop. Fenway is located on the campus of Boston University, which is strategically placed near the Charles River and Fenway Park (think baseball). The famous Newbury Street is also very near -- eight blocks filled with salons, boutiques, and great places to eat.
Rooms and Bathrooms
This is a no frills university dorm. It has many benefits though. Without the usual bunk beds, the room feels very spacious, especially with only three beds per room. This is great for getting to know people, not so great if your roommies are a bit dodgy (note that rooms are separated by sex). Private rooms are also available. All rooms come equipped with a bathroom, which is clean and well maintained.
Common Spaces
The general atmosphere is a bit depressing -- the common area is a huge, impersonal space with a sea of chairs facing a large TV. Most of the guests spend the evening sitting here staring at the screen like zombies -- either this or waiting desperately in line for the internet. Internet use is oddly paid for with dollar notes, the computers often gets jammed full so make sure you bring your card just in case. The kitchen comes in the form of a measly microwave shoved in a grotty corner. However this is what you would expect from student halls that are clearly catered during the school term.
Summary
By all means stay in Fenway, but just don't get your hopes up. It does the job -- it's clean, affordable, and spacious enough to spend a few comfortable nights, but not much else.
