Avis de Hostelz.com
It's located in Fort Mason, which is on the north edge of the city, next to the bay. It's a little ways from the middle of downtown (10-15 by bus), but it's a 5-10 minute walk to the Fisherman's Wharf and the piers. A big advantage of the location if you have a car is that it's the only hostel in the city that offers free parking. At any other hostel in the city you would need to either pay for an expensive parking garage or park out in the avenues and take a bus back to your hostel.

It's a large HI hostel. The rooms are various sizes, so the number of people staying in your dorm room will vary depending on which room you get. As with most large HI hostels, people keep to themselves a little more than at smaller hostels, so you may or may not meet a lot of social people. There are several common areas, including a large sitting area upstairs with couches and internet computers (charging a fee). Downstairs is a very large dining area and kitchen. By the reception the walls are covered in information about the bay area and it's a great place to get information about the city. There may also be a volunteer to answer questions at the information table in the mornings.

Beautiful Location!
This hostel is set back from the street overlooking the water -- really beautiful, safe and quiet location in a quirky old building. The staff was friendly and very helpful. If you are looking for a party hostel in the city center this is not the hostel for you. I had a view of the water from my room and I would stay here again. I also met some great people there. The beds are not that comfortable and the accommodations are basic but it's a hostel. Although, this hostel is not in the center I still found it very easy to get around. SF has a great bus system. Also, if you have a car they have free parking!

Watch Out
I stayed here with my husband and we think we got bedbug bites. Just make sure you check the bed really well before sleeping.

Really really quiet. Library quiet! The bathroom was ok. Not very private but clean. The kitchen is massive which is great. They have a free breakfast and it's also great. This place was just so quiet (no social atmosphere at all). Good value and the staff were friendly enough.

I stayed at this hostel for five nights in August of this year. no complaints to be made really, I found the staff helpful and friendly and the location is absolutely beautiful. just a few steps out of the hostel and you can see Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge!! There is also a nice cafe where you can buy snacks but a free breakfast is also provided (bagel or waffles with tea/coffee plus orange juice) and also a big kitchen downstairs if you prefer to do your own cooking. The only (minor) complaint I would have would be the beds. the ones we slept on were quite uncomfortable and the mattresses seemed to be made of some kind of plastic. Also, if you prefer a party atmosphere then this may not be the hostel for you. there seemed to be quite a few families staying there when I was there. However the area where it is situated is much nicer (and safer!) than downtown!

Horrible experience I could not get proper direction on how to get there. it turn out FT Mason is not a street! I was driving for two hours and the stupid looser at the front desk that answer my four phone calls could not make sure I get the right direction from downtown san francisco. At the end when a tourist in the street told me that ft mason was not a street I had enough because that was something the person at the hostel should have told me but it did not. Do not go here find a closer to downtown hostel this hostel is far away and cold!

No major complaints. The parking lot and bus stops are a little far from the actual hostel. But the hostel itself is clean, friendly, and has helpful staff. Beautifully located and peacefully quiet. Met some people staying at the downtown HI, they said it was nice but noisy. Great views of the San Francisco beautiful housing, Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, etc. Love the free wireless, breakfast is standard, watch out for the cat -- he's friendly but meows a lot at night! Dorms have lots of bed with lockers under the beds (great space saving technique). So much to do in and around San Francisco. If you have the chance take a wine-tasting tour in Napa Valley, hike Yosemite Park or Muir Woods, Lumbard St, Golden Gate, trolley ride, shopping, Pier Thirty-nine, so much, so little time!

Stayed here four nights in early May, 2006. Could not find anything to complain about here (other than some guests may complain about me -- I'm one of those snorers.) Excellent location and the free parking, although some distance from the building, was convenient and safe. Beautiful location and the cafe was good for breakfast. This speaks well for Hostelling International, which I notice has dropped turkeys like that one in New Orleans.

Fantastic hostel! The location is awesome! Walk outside and see the Golden Gate, fifteen minute walk along the bay to Fisherman's Wharf and a cable car into the city centre. The rooms are very clean and neat. Great free lockers (provide own lock) under bed with heaps of room. Free wireless internet. Clean and friendly common area. Breakfast is a croissant/two waffles and juice/tea/coffee in small onsite cafe. Bathrooms are reasonable, staff are very friendly. Secure luggage storage until check in is available. Must remember to keep your booking reservation on you because they check every time you enter. Grab a shuttle bus from the airport for a great drive into the hostel (it's reasonably cheap and convenient). I would definitely stay here again when in San Francisco.

The location was beautiful, but finding public transportation was kind of an issue. The people at the desk were very friendly, but during the night, one of them came to wake us up because people were sleeping in the wrong beds, and they insisted on correction that issue in the middle of the night. The common room was great, even though there was a beautiful looking cat that nearly bit my finger off when I petted it. The showers were okay. Breakfast was okay, not too much, but better than in most other hostels. There was a big kitchen with a jukebox. Reasonably clean. The matrasses were very thin, and kind of uncomfortable.

Anytime I come to San Francisco this is where I stay. Why? Because it's got the best view, the best location, and the staff are very, very cool. They are helpful and nice, with clean sheets at the ready. I would recommend Ft. Mason hostel to anyone, from any country, with any budget. Food is okay. But it's not about the food; it's about the people and the place. And these are the best people, the best place. If you are cool, like me...well, you'd stay here. Let your freak flag fly high. Peace.

This is my favorite hostel in San Francisco. The Pros: I like the free parking, and the free high-speed wireless. It has the best location in San Francisco, a free movie at 8 p.m. every night, a huge dining room with fridges to put your food, nice stoves, and lockers to lock your stuff up (they sell locks for $2.) The Cons: Bring earplugs for the people who snore in the dorm rooms! There is no ventilation in dorm rooms so see if can keep one window open at least. If there is someone sick in your dorm room, you will most likely to catch what they have as there is no air circulation. So maybe wear a facemask and take big dose of vitamin C. The free parking is like 1/10 mile away so lock up drop off stuff at dorms first, then hike back from parking. If you're female and all alone, bring a friend for protection at night. Bring your own breakfast, unless a bagel is all you need. Most of all I recommend this hostel. It's the only one I will go to. I wish they would work on ventilation and installing ionizers in the dorm rooms. I like the 60's hippie kind of energy there.

The hostel is in a beautiful natural area with great views of the bay. If you were looking to have a relaxing vacation, then this place would be good because it is removed from the busy city. I was not looking to relax and found this hostel out of the way and boring. My friends and I are in our twenties and we were by far the youngest people in the place. We did meet nice people, but not the crowd we were hoping for. Breakfast sucked; it was a bagel and coffee. I thought it was too expensive for having to sleep in bunks in a mass room. It's a good place if you're older or have kids, but otherwise, I'd say skip it.

I was here shortly before Christmas for three nights. It is in a great location, in a park next to Fisherman's Wharf. You can get everywhere by foot, bus or cable car. It's definitely the best location. You can park your car for free near the hostel in the park where the youth hostel is located. The staff were friendly and helpful (four stars). The rooms and bathrooms were quite clean (three stars). They had big wooden lockers underneath the beds for your less valuable stuff. In the hallway are lockers that are more secure but small. Bring your own lock or buy one for five bucks. The rooms and showers were mostly clean. The breakfast was one bagel. That's not enough for me, but I won't complain, it's for free! You can buy more if you want to. You can also buy some food for lunch or dinner, if you are too tired to go anywhere out to eat and don't have anything to cook in the huge kitchen. Without knowing the other hostels in San Francisco I am sure that this is the best place to stay.

The downstairs women's dorm had green moldy stuff on the window ledges. I think someone with allergies wouldn't be able to stay there. Other than that, it was wonderful.

I found the place to have a strange odor and the windows to the dorm didn't open enough to provide good ventilation. I also stayed in the basement, which is very noisy, especially when kids start playing foosball at 7 a.m. The sheets they provided were quite thin, and the one shower stall for the basement was hard to adjust to a comfortable temperature and was rather gross. It's not the hostel's fault, but I had two of the world's loudest snorers in my room for my entire stay! (Although the lack of ventilation probably didn't help.) I'm not sure why some people give this place five stars; maybe it's good by US standards (this is the only US hostel I've stayed in), but I've stayed in much nicer hostels in Europe.
