What a find! HI - Point Montara Lighthouse is located in a building on lighthouse grounds. It was the first hostel experience for our mother and young niece. They loved it! We shared a public dorm room. It is cheaper than going private, yet there are only three beds in the room -- perfect!

The managers are super-friendly and helpful. The views of the ocean are breathtaking! There is a path to a small private beach nearby. Don't think you can swim here, though -- the water is too rough.

This hostel does have a lockout period (10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.), when tours are offered to the public. Thankfully, you're close to so much, including San Francisco and Santa Cruz, that finding something to do shouldn't be a problem. There is also a curfew of 11 p.m, but the hostel has a nice common room with a selection of books and board games.

There is a kitchen available for your use. However, a car is needed to get to this hostel, so why not take advantage of the delicious restaurants nearby? We highly recommend "That's Italia!" -- it's in a strip mall in Half Moon Bay, which makes it harder to find but well worth the search.

Families are welcome here, even babies, but they need to be in a private room. As for private rooms, you could definitely make it a romantic getaway. All of the private rooms have ocean views.

Really, the only downside we found with this hostel is the lack of bathrooms. There are thirty-five beds but only two single bathrooms. Each has a shower. Of course, when this lighthouse was built, they probably weren't thinking it was going to become a hostel one day. All in all, we enjoyed a very pleasant stay at a fraction of the cost of nearby hotels -- we highly, highly recommend it!

Beautiful, quiet, remote location with beach
We loved the beach behind this hostel, it was beautiful and untouched. The hostel was well run, as clean as can be expected. We are a married couple and stayed in a private room, kept to ourselves. However, the two kitchens and living area provide ample opportunity for interaction if we had chosen to do so. The only disadvantage is that if you do stay in the private Fog Room you have to walk outside to go to the bathroom. And they did not use paper products for bathrooms or kitchen, so hand towels got kind of dirty and wet toward the end of the day. Overall, beautiful!

ok ok. yes the view is good. yes it is good to hear the ocean from your bed but there are a few things that put me off this hostel. some of this could also have to do with the season i was there. it was winter and although not cold, not the kind of weather in which you can enjoy the beautiful grounds. there is a lockout from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., which is frustrating, you are not allowed alcohol on the premises, and the smoking area is so ridiculous that i just broke that rule entirely. i can understand that this would be a great place for families, but as an independent traveler i was quite disappointed. i didn't have a car and feared for my life on the highway. the buses are terrible and only run every hour and a half on weekdays -- less on weekends. i don't like HI in general because i find that they lack character. i felt that the atmosphere in the hostel was not conducive to meeting people and i found the staff kind of unhelpful. thats not that they weren't nice but one girl had very little knowledge of activities in the area and the other woman said that there was a nice trail when it was in fact mostly road and the little trail there was was not very good. i don't recommend this hostel, but if you're like me and you have to make your own opinions then go for it.

The hostel was great! You can hear the ocean from your room all night long and you wake up to a great view. A small trail leads down to the ocean. The staff was friendly and I had no problems with my stay. An adjustable heater made my private room cozy and the showers had hot water. My room was clean and perfect for two. Don't forget your bath towel and clean shower-shoes (flip-flops) since showers are shared.

Point Montara Lighthouse has a magical effect on my spirit. Every time I go there, I feel renewed to life and relaxed as no other place leaves me. I love this place!

I stayed for one night at this hostel a few years ago while I was in San Francisco celebrating a life-changing event with friends. The views are incredible; it is an absolutely gorgeous place in the world! The woman who checked us in was unwelcoming and appeared to go out of her way to be unfriendly, however all else about the experience was fabulous. There was one refrigerator and cupboard there that contained food for all to share, which was nice. We had brought along plenty of food and ate at a restaurant in Half Moon Bay the next morning anyway. Met many friendly and interesting people of all ages there. Highly recommended.

In the summer of 2004 I found the Montara Hostel, as ever, a delightful pied-a-terre for exploring the wonderful California coastline south to Half Moon Bay. Walk south along the cliffs and beach, have lunch on the way, then take the Samtrans bus back - right to the hostel! There's also an espresso cafe five minutes north. When you need a break from San Francisco, this is pure heaven. Any season is beautiful here - but book ahead in high summer.

My wife and I stayed here in October of 2003 with our two young children. The staff were wonderful and they even gave us a break on the cost of our overnight stay. We stayed in the large building next to the historic lighthouse and slept well. The kids loved the place and the morning views were terrific. We highly recommend staying here!

My family and I stayed here for one night on August 6, 2004. This property is great. We stayed in the private room (queen-size bunk with a twin above), with a shared bathroom. The only complaint I had was one of the two kitchens was a disaster after someone made a full meal and a cake and then left everything out for a couple of hours before cleaning up (and the staff allowed this). They could have supplied a little more dishwashing soap and some towels for the kitchens, too. Lastly, our unit had no hot water. It made for a very chilly (and fast) shower to say the least. But I would most definitely stay here again. Nowhere else can you get a similar coastal experience and great sunset shots!

I stayed here in July 2004. This is definitely a wonderful, hidden place to stay, although it was awfully "touristy" in the summer with many people staying only one or two nights, then going on their way elsewhere. You can't beat the sound of the Pacific Ocean below the hostel bedrooms (which you can hear if your room is on the ocean side of the building), the historic lighthouse, or the feeling of sitting out above the Ocean at 10 p.m., listening to the ocean's roar, looking up at a dark sky full of stars, and planning your next day's adventures! It's not big on local hiking within walking distance, but there are a number of great local park areas with hundreds of miles of hiking trails. You definitely need a car, although several bus lines pass the main road in front of the hostel and will get you into San Francisco and local BART (regional subway system) stations. The staff were not very friendly during my visit, though the hostel itself is very clean and well kept.

What an amazing view! This has got to be the best deal in the Bay Area! The private rooms could have sold for a few hundred dollars! The staff is friendly, and the marine reserve down the road is not to be missed. Stay here, please!

What a fantastic hostel! Great staff--they obviously take pride in this place. I got a room with a fabulous ocean view. The little beach at the hostel is a gem. I loved the games that were available in the common room and the displays about sea life. It was lovely, lovely in every way.

I cannot believe no other hosteller has written in on this one. Incredible views of the sea crashing below as you sit in an old lifesaving station. Good rooms, good commons area, a hot tub as I recall. Several nice walks. I drove there, but there may be some public buses, too.
