HI - Hangzhou - Youth Hostel can be a little bit hard to find, because it's a little bit off the main street -- you need to turn into the parking lot and it is on your right (look for the Utels sign).
The Location
The hostel is located on the Nanshan Road, the main road along the lake.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The beds are hard due to the very thin mattresses. To get to the top bunk, there are large stairs instead of ladders, which is original and easier to tackle during dark nights. The rooms have windows with mosquito nets and air-conditioning. There are individual lockers with keys and individual shelves and reading lights for each bed. The room's door is locked by an electronic card-key.
The communal bathrooms have one squat and one western-style toilet. There are about five showers, which is sufficient that you don't have to queue in the morning. There are hooks and soap holder in the shower. The floors is slippery when wet, but it's clean.
Common Spaces
There are two cafes. One is where breakfast is served and there is a large TV. The other is really more cafe-style, with tables and a bar which serves cakes, coffees, and beers, plus a few meals. Guidebooks can be borrowed from the reception. Breakfast is available for approximately a price (it's a buffet, very good, with scrambled eggs, fruit, dumplings, noodles, potatoes). There is free internet in the reception area and a clothes line under a covered area on the roof.
Summary
The hostel staff were not very helpful in finding out train timetables. The beds are definitely very hard. Discounts apply for members of the youth hostel association.
