Avis de Hostelz.com
Auberge Maeva is an excellent place to stay, whether for a couple of nights or for longterm. It's a great place to meet people, as it's quite small with a very friendly atmosphere. The walls in the hall are covered with people's thoughts on their stay and there is not one bad report! Many people return over and over again to the same hostel, so it's obviously a worthwhile experience. The staff are some of the most friendly and pleasant hostel staff we've come across and are very helpful.

The Location

The hostel is located in a good area, only about a minute's walk from the metro stop (the metro can shuttle you to most places you'd want to go). It's very easy to find and the metro is very efficient and easy to use. It's set on quite a quiet end of the street in a nice (and safe) neighbourhood. There is a great French-style supermarket about five minutes' walk away, along with loads of shops and restaurants. There is also a free swimming pool (also about five minutes away), which is an added bonus.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorms are great -- really brightly coloured, clean and tidy, with plenty of storage space. Security seems fine as well, with locking doors and only a few rooms. The rooms have sinks, but the bathrooms are shared, and it would help if there were more bathrooms, but generally it isn't a problem. The showers are good and everything is very clean. On the whole, it's very homey.

Common Spaces

The common areas are excellent and really help people to meet and get chatting. The kitchen is big and clean, with everything you need. There's a huge common table where people can sit round and get to know others. This is great at breakfast time, when an incredibly generous supply of bread, jam, and butter is supplied. There are bags of it! There is also a big room downstairs with games and TV and free internet in the room at reception and there's an outside patio with seating areas.

Summary

Overall, we love this hostel. The atmosphere is excellent and it is clean, tidy, fun, secure, and in a great location -- everything you need in a hostel really. So look no further and stay here!

Highly recommend this hostel. Friendly owner, staff, interesting fellow guests. I had never stayed in a hostel before but I felt really welcome and safe here as well. Two-minute walk from the subway and in a nice neighbourhood. I had a great time here!

Well, we stayed there wih a friend of mine for four nights and I really liked being there. We have met so many nice people, great location.. Easy to deal with staff, even if we had couple of problems at the begining. Overall experience was positive. I really love Montreal and whenever I am back, cause I will be moving there. I will obviously spend another four to five nights at this hostel. Thanks to Momo and others!

Stayed here late May '06, alone, four nights. I think I had a bad experience here. The hostel is beautiful and very cosy, everything is very clean and well-run, in a pretty good location that's a little out of the city (five minutes on metro) but in a beautiful neighborhood away from the hustle and bustle. During my stay though I felt as if I was intruding on someone else's personal life. There were a couple older "long term resident" types there with 'a lot of character," the kitchen was always overcrowded, the front door is never locked, the bathroom is generally occupied. The owner was a great man and the hostel itself seems fine -- something just didn't click for me though.

An excellent, central location in trendy Plateau Mont Royal neighborhood; warm hospitality; affordable rates ($20 CAD night / dormitory); no curfew; clean; overall relaxing environment. Highly recommended.

My boyfriend had to go to Montreal for a month and we researched the web for a convenient hostel. I liked the looks of Auberge Maeva so decided to take a chance. We made the right choice because the owners are friendly, caring and helpful. The living quarters are clean, neat and comfortable. I felt happy about the choice because I knew my boyfriend was in a safe and friendly environment. The rates are more than reasonable. It is located in a pleasant area with transportation close at hand. We picked a winner! You will enjoy your stay.

We stayed at this hostel over New Years 2005 and had an amazing time! The hostel is quite nice, with few beds to a room (2-6), clean bathrooms, a nice kitchen that is very useable, etc. During busy times there's a lineup for the upstairs bathroom but the basement bathroom is usually available and much, much nicer anyway. The people are very friendly but very Francophone, so try speaking French if you can. It's within walking distance to Ave Mont-Royal and St-Denis, which are some of my favorite areas for going out and all. The whole area is very artsy/alternative and we met some great people. The hostel definitely comes highly recommended, and at $18-$20 the price is unbeatable!

I LOVED this hostel. It totally made my trip to Montreal worthwhile. The people were so friendly (staff and guests) and the place was very clean and so safe. I never had a worry about leaving stuff in my room to go out exploring. It's in a beautiful neighborhood too, just a couple of blocks from nightlife and restaurants.

This place has nice small dorms, and a cozy atmosphere. However, when the hostel is full there can be quite a queue for the bathroom, and for breakfast. It's very close to the Metro station, or about a 40-minute walk to downtown.

Auberge Maeva Montreal was my home away from home for two weeks...a lovely, friendly place. Very cool place. A bit of a walk (30-40 min) from Downtown Montreal (I had a bike, which I recommend, but also the subway station is very close) but the area of Montreal in which it is located is quite lively also. I don't think you'd be disappointed. It was delightful. One other thing of note...you do have to be quiet at nighttime. There is a lovely terrace/porch, but the curfew is 10:30 pm...so not the best place for late-night partying. But there is the city for that.

I strongly recommend it! I've spent some days here and highly appreciate the place: the owners are adorable, and their breakfast is, too :-) At $20 (summer price) this place is really cheap compared to others I've been to.
