Avis de Hostelz.com
The Black Cockatoo really is a unique place to stay. The accommodation is based just on the edge of the very small town of Nannup (a two-minute walk to city centre). Nannup itself has a few cafes, a telecentre for email/internet, two general stores, fish and chip shop, hotel with bar, tourist info, and a bottle shop. There are a few craft-type shops too. You can get to the accommodation by car -- a great stop if travelling Albany to Margaret River by transwa coach or the Backpacker oriented 'Easy Rider' jump on jump off bus service.

There are limited things to do in Nannup but those seeking peace and calm will be satisfied with the plentiful walking trails, canoeing, absence of TV, and numerous peaceful spots in the Black Cockatoo's garden -- bring a few good books!

The accommodation offers two dorm rooms with standard beds -- a nice change from bunk beds. There is the Angel room (a double bed in the cabin in the garden) and the Tiger room (double and single bed). All share one bathroom with tub and shower and two toilets. The hostel has very reasonable rates and you can even camp in their garden.

There are basic kitchen facilities with gas hob, fridge, toaster, and kettle -- there's no oven and no microwave. There are plenty of places to eat in Nannup, however. You can buy eggs from the chickens in the garden and the herb garden is free to use for guests. A washing machine is available. There's no tumble dryer but there are ample drying lines in the huge garden.

Their are no lockers or cupboards in the rooms, but there's no real need for security here as it's such a rural location and friendly place. In the huge garden there are so many spots for relaxing, including a hammock, a swing, a double swing seat, yoga decking, several picnic benches and tables, comfy seats, and plentiful grass. There is a good-sized lounge area with plentiful supply of reading material -- travel guides, New Age literature, and modern books -- as well as board games, Jenga, and cards provided. The owner, Gary, is extremely helpful and friendly and always happy to suggest local activities without being intrusive.

This hostel is kept clean and tidy, but as the accommodation is in a converted timber cottage, do not expect ultra-clean stainless steel. This place is a must if you're into things eco-friendly.
