A Welcome Break Hostal has a great location close to the bus stop, but is very, very quiet.
The Location
The location of A Welcome Break Hostal is excellent. It is about a ten- to fifteen-minute walk from the main bus terminal and a five- to ten-minute walk from the riverfront. You will find loads of places to eat alone here and in the surrounding area as well as tour operators that can help you plan your jungle and rafting trips.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are quite a few different dorm room options here, and the rooms are spacious and clean, albeit basic. The rooms come with a key so that you can lock the door to keep your valuables safe when you leave. The beds are comfortable, though bugs do get into the rooms in the evening through the tops of the windows, especially when the lights are on.
The bathrooms are clean and spacious, and there is one on each floor with separate cubicles for toilets and showers. There is hot water, which is a bonus, and the water pressure is decent.
Common Spaces
There is one area outside in the main entrance that has a hammock and a few chairs about where you can get decent Wi-Fi and sit about. Most of the time, though, there aren't really people sitting here, which makes it a hard place to meet people if you are traveling alone. If you are looking for some alone time and peace and quiet, you will find it here.
There is a small outdoor kitchenette which has a gas-operated stove and a few pots and dishes for cooking very basic meals. They also have a fridge in which to store food. Most of the cutlery and plates are stored in a plastic tub to keep them clean.
Summary
This hostel is a nice, cheap, and basic place to lay your head while you explore Tena; however, if you're looking for atmosphere, you won't find it here. They have good security with a buzzer on the gate to let people in, however, they often don't respond to the reception bell if you're on the premises and need help. It is ok to spend a night or two, but if you need company you might be pulling your hair out after a few days.
