The Hostelz.com Review - Genuine, independent review you can trust.
Tree House Hostel is one of the best options in the area, with a great location, breakfast, and (most importantly) a cheap price! This hostel takes its name literally from the giant mango tree in the middle of the common room. You'll be relaxing and eating delicious mangoes all day!
The Location
The hostel is located in Getsemaní, a nice neighborhood full of nightlife and only fifty meters away from Plaza de la Santísima Trinidad (Holy Trinity Square) and two hundred meters away from Media Luna Street, where all the colorful restaurants and bars can be found. Every night the square comes to life with live music, food trucks, and special entertainment such as movie festivals or street-dance performances. It's a great place to mingle with the locals and other travelers. The hostel is within walking distance from the Walled City, where you can also catch the bus (Transcaribe) to go to the bus terminal (forty-five minutes), Bazurto market (twenty minutes), or the airport (twenty-five minutes).
Rooms and Bathrooms
Shared bedrooms are really spacious, with lots of storage room for your backpacks and valuables. There are lockers, shelves, and two trunks under each bed. Every bed has a plug next to it. There are two ceiling fans per room and even though it's really hot in Cartagena, they keep the room fresh. Bunk beds are made from a heavy material, so they don't tremble at every small move like some do. Mattresses are comfortable and new.
Out of three shared bathrooms, only two of them have showers. They are all cleaned regularly and have soap and toilet paper supplied for free. Water is freezing but considering the weather, it's ok.
Common Spaces
The hostel has one big patio with hammocks, chairs, and a dining table. There is also a small room with a pool/foosball table, board games, a TV, and couches to hang out until midnight when they turn the lights off. The kitchen is small and has a big fridge, microwave, and blender, but there are few plates, pans, and bowls that are really necessary for cooking. In the morning, the staff uses the kitchen to make breakfast, but they let you use it anyway. The breakfast is coffee, bread, jam, butter, and eggs. Sometimes they also give you fruit.
Summary
Despite being really close to Cartagena's wild nightlife, the hostel itself its not very party-like. It's a quiet place where people go to chill, cook a nice meal, and make new friends. It is a great place to relax, meet other travelers, and get to know the city while staying on a budget.
