HARUYA Umekoji Reviews

HARUYA Umekouji is a special hostel consisting of several well-renovated, one-hundred-year-old, traditional Japanese houses. There are privates and dorms as well as female-only rooms. As seems usual for HARUYA hostels, the reception is very polite and Japanese, which is really great but may be awkward for those not familiar with it, but it totally fits the style of the hostel.

The Location

The hostel isn’t in the middle of the famous Kyoto neighborhoods. But in a quieter area fifteen minutes' walking from the central Kyoto train station, in a tranquil block befitting the atmosphere of the old buildings. Kyoto is an easy city in which to do walking sightseeing, but the hostel also has bikes for rent, or many bike shops are near the station as well. Nearby buses can bring you closer to Kyoto’s farther attractions when walking and biking isn’t an option.

No food is served in the hostel, but there are some restaurants nearby, including a cheap breakfast buffet.

Rooms and Bathrooms

All the room are in a traditional Japanese style, in the one-hundred-year-old style of the building. The dorm consists of bunk beds, while the private rooms have futon beds. A room robe (haori) is provided to keep you warm. Power plugs and some clothing hangers are in the room. The blankets are bit too small for our company of six feet tall and above. Extra pillows are available in the common room. All rooms seem very well kept and cleaned. Since the building is entirely kept in the old style, that also means it can be somewhat noisier; this never bothered us, and free earplugs are available if needed.

Toilets are accessed through the small inner garden, which is beautiful and also in the old style, though going through the garden in winter -- even just the one meter -- can be a bit inconvenient. At least the toilet is the modern Japanese variant, thus you will not sit on a cold toilet seat. The bathroom with (sitting) bathtub is inside the building and is very small, but all the more refreshing and warm in the winter months.

Common Spaces

The common area that you have available kind of depends on which building you are in. Though you can indeed access all buildings, it is unlikely you will do so. A small library is only available in the main building with the reception, while there is also seating and a kitchen in the other buildings (and of course, the seating area is in traditional Japanese style). The kitchen is very simple and only equipped with the facilities to make coffee (powder) and tea and a sink to clean. Though, the kitchen is not really equipped for any cooking, there is a fridge available for food storage.

Summary

HARUYA hostels bring you the living experience in old Japanese housing. It is great experience to stay in a traditional old Japanese house that has been made fit for modern living. The hostel is well maintained and very tranquil; the music played in the common area really adds to this quiet and tranquil atmosphere. In short, HARUYA hostel offers a great, clean, traditional experience with basic facilities and a tranquil atmosphere.
