Hostel The White Butterfly Reviews

At Hostel The White Butterfly, the price is unbeatable and the location is awesome, and overall our group who stayed in the three-person, private room had a great time here. The staff are incredibly helpful, getting our luggage up the stairs; and one man even walked us over to his favorite restaurant; and on the day we left, after our checkout time they held our luggage in the back so we could go out and explore before our flight. In Lagos, you won't be spending much time in your room, so this place is perfectly fine for somewhere to sleep, shower, and get ready, so that most of your time can be spent at the beach or exploring the beautiful town.

The Location

The location is right on the street with a bunch of bars and restaurants and little shops. There's a bar right next door with amazing drink deals; another bar, right down the street the opposite way, is more of a club-like bar. If you want to go out and be a part of Lagos' nightlife, then this location is absolutely perfect -- it's in the center of everything. It is about a twenty-minute walk to the closest beach though, but for us, that is no problem at all. It seems that in Lagos you have to either stay closer to the beach or closer to the town center and trade off the distance from one or another.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The three-person private room has three twin beds and a chair and a full bathroom all within the room. It is perfectly fine for us, and we have no problems with the room at all. In this area of Lagos, everything is older, so the room isn't completely updated and modern looking, but that's perfectly fine because the older history of the place is what makes it so beautiful. The bathroom has a shower and sink and toilet and everything works and is pretty clean. For this private room, they gave us a key and you just lock the room up when you leave and don't have to worry about anything.

Common Spaces

There is a kitchen, an indoor common space with couches, and a pretty outdoor common area. We didn't use the kitchen much other than to borrow some cups, but it looks functional for cooking some easy meals, and the indoor common area has a TV. Each morning there is free coffee to drink, which is nice, and there always seems to be people hanging out reading or eating in the beautiful outdoor area. We will say, however, that in the pictures it looks like the little pool or hot tub outside is functioning, but it actually wasn't during our stay, and there was no water or anything in it. It's not a big deal, but it would've been nice if it were working!

Summary

We would definitely recommend The White Butterfly if you're a young traveler who wants the awesome location and doesn't plan on spending too much time in your room. This place is perfect for everything we needed and is the cheapest hostel we found in our travels all around Europe. Lagos is absolutely beautiful and so much fun, and if you stay here you'll get a great opportunity to see that!

Description

Hostel Caza de Sao Goncalo is an old 4 star hotel building that has been converted into a vintage hostel in Lagos, deep in the south west corner of Portugal. its right in the heart of the buzzing historical centre of town. all the bars and restaurants are there on the doorstep, great value Portuguese cuisine, international food too, bars to chill or party with original music and drink deals. all this within a 5 min (most of them less!) walk from the door. warning: walk home may take a little longer,....... Lagos is famous for its bars!!

Hostel Caza de Sao Goncalo has dorm rooms, 4 and 3 bed rooms, and also private double rooms for couples all rooms have their own private bathrooms. Breakfast is included in the room price.
there's a large communal room and a huge patio, with a stone jacuzzi, to hang out in, suck back a cold beer and get some sun, all surrounded by the building. the house is very old, its like a castle inside! carved stone stairs, original tile or wood parquet floors, antique furniture/fittings and rooms with high ceilings. you feel like royalty when you walk in the door of the oldest new Lagos hostel! We have plenty of beds in the house so big groups are welcome, and there's bbq nights, pizza nights etc....

there's a fully equipped (stainless steel restaurant equipment) kitchen to cook up a feast in, a laundry and free wifi for everyone. we have secure indoor parking for motorbikes or bicycles.
The reception has someone there 24hrs a day.

There's a great selection of activities in Lagos..... surfing, fishing, mountain biking, sailing, kite surfing, sea kayaks, boat charters, grotto trips, horse riding, skydiving to name just a few.

the owners of Hostel Caza de Sao Goncalo are Rodolfo, born and bred in Lagos, and tobe, south-west English guy living in Lagos for 21 years. so if you need anything to do or local knowledge, we can hook you up!!

Lagos has several beautiful beaches. the infamous Praia da Batata (potato beach) is less than 10 mins by foot, with caves, grottos and more secret beaches you can explore at low tide. meia praia is a 5km long open beach close by, Porto do mos, Praia do Camilo, Praia dona ana and more all there for you. enough beaches to go to a different one every day!
Cabo sao Vicente (cape st. Vincent) is a half hour drive from our lagos hostel, where people used to think the world ended.... of course that seems silly now that we know the world is flat. monchique is about 45 mins away, the algarves highest mountain, where you can see the entire west coast, south coast and even spain on a clear day.

getting to Hostel Caza de Sao Goncalois easy as Lagos has extremely good access...its the last stop on the train line, has buses from lisbon and seville, a motorway right to town and faro airport is an hour away by car.

our friendly staff are here to make you feel welcome, and help you maximise your stay in lagos....
