Backpackers Heaven@Kuldeep Friends Hostel Reviews

At first you might not see the "Kuldeep Friends Hostel" sign, as you’re standing in the middle of a bazaar street with so much going on around you. Then you feel relief when you spot the sign and head down the dark little alley. But you quickly realize you have no idea where you’re going or where the hostel is. Luckily all the locals are friendly and quite happy to direct you in the right direction. If you can get past the strong urine smell, cow dung and litter, you will be ok -- this is New Delhi, you have to get used it it!

The Location

The hostel is in the city center in the middle of the bazaar street. Even though the street is complete chaos, once inside the hostel it is quiet. You don’t have to navigate far down the alley either. It’s only around ten minutes from the street. The advantage of this location is that you are twelve minutes' walking distance (one kilometer) from the train and metro stations. The metro and train stations are next to each other. There are shops of every kind, hotels, hostels, restaurants, and travel agencies everywhere. You don’t have to be concerned about transport either, as the rickshaws are everywhere and they will stop and ask you if you want a ride.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Our four-bed dorm room is up two flights of stairs. The room is small, but comfortable enough. Between the two bunk beds are large wooden lockers. The beds have sturdy metal frames and the mattress is comfortable and on the hard side. The pillow is comfortable and the blanket is huge. We rented towels, as toiletries and towels are not included in the price. Please note that this means there is no toilet paper in the bathroom either. Each bed is equipped with three electric sockets and a bright reading light. Unfortunately the Wi-Fi is not very good. There is only one window in the room and it opens up to the passage; this is a problem as there is a lot of noise from the common room/reception area, until after midnight. The bedroom walls are covered with mold.

The bathroom is en suite; although this sounds like a great idea, it isn’t! There is no ventilation in the bathroom whatsoever and this is what causes the mould in the dorm room. There is also no soundproofing, so you can hear every sound from the bathroom (not an ideal situation). The taps and shower head are extremely rusty and the walls, basin, and toilet are disgustingly dirty. Once you’ve had a shower, everything is wet and it’s a bit tricky getting dressed without getting your clothes wet too. There are a few hooks behind the door to hang your towel and dry clothes.

Common Spaces

The staff in the reception area are friendly and welcoming. There is one small couch in the reception area, but it’s not a place to be social. The kitchen is tiny and dirty. We wanted to make a cup of coffee but the one and only pot was dirty. Right next to the kitchen is a fairly large bookshelf with many books. At the far back is a common room, which really consists of a mattress and one small wooden bench. It’s a pity, as a couple of couches would create a lovely common area for guests.

Summary

This hostel really only provides you with a bed, as the common area is nonexistent. If you can look past the dirt and mould, then the location is great and you should be happy here for a night or two.

Location and Contact

Location

• From Airport:
• Please e-mail the hostel to arrange an airport pickup for you at nominal cost.
• Hire a RELIABLE post-paid taxi at the booth at the airport exit gate (Meru Cabs, Easy Cabs or Ola Cabs ONLY!!! - Or be prepared to be scammed). It should cost INR 600-750(depending on the route and taxi operator) to Main Bazar Pahar Ganj which is where we are located.
• Take the airport express metro line from Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal 3 to New Delhi Railway Metro Station. Exit and hire a tuk tuk from the Ajmeree Gate side of the station. It should cost approximatelyINR 100-150 depending on your negotiation skills with the tuk tuk driver toMain Bazar Pahar Ganj , which is where we are located.
• -From New Delhi Railway Station:
• Exit and hire a tuk tuk from the New Delhi Train Station Pahar Ganj side of the station. It should cost approximately or INR 50 - 100 depending on your negotiation skills with the tuk tuk driver to Asaf Ali Road, Daryaganj, which is where we are located.
• -From Old Delhi Railway Station:
• Exit and hire a tuk tuk from the Chandni Chowk side of the station. It should cost approximately INR 250-3300depending on your negotiation skills with the tuk tuk driver to Main Bazar Pahar Ganj , which is where we are located.
• -Some help with last mile directions!
• The most prominent landmark near the hostel is Hotel Vivek Main Bazar Pahar ganj, which is where we are located. You need to tell the driver to take you to Main Bazar Pahar Ganj
• You can also find us on Google maps as Hostel New KIng
• Also, we would like to take this opportunity to warn you against some of the scams you need to be aware of in Delhi.
• Taxi drivers may try to tell you that the hostel is closed or the roads to the hostel are closed and you can not even walk up to the hostel. This is not true. The hostel is open and all the roads to the hostel are operational. They may even pretend to dial the number to the hostel and make you talk to somebody who will tell you they are from the front desk of the hostel and that your booking is cancelled. This is NOT TRUE. We would recommend that you dial the number on your own and talk to the manager on duty on your own. We have a 24*7 reception and our mangers will be able to guide you to the hostel.
• The reason for the scam is to take travelers to expensive hotels from where the taxi drivers can make extra money on commissions. Travelers are often sold expensive packages to Agra and Jaipur as part of the scam.
• Please note that the hostel is fully functional and all the roads leading up to the hostel are open. If you are facing such a situation, please get in touch with us directly and we will guide you to the hostel.
• If you are arriving from the Airport, please take a Post Paid Radio Taxi like Meru or Easy Cabs rather than a black and yellow cab. All Radio Taxis have GPS trackers, hence chances of getting scammed reduce considerably.
